It's Madison Week at OnMilwaukee.com. We sent our editorial staff to check out bars, restaurants, retail outlets and cultural venues in order to uncover some of the best of Wisconsin's second-largest city.

Where it is: Located just southeast of the downtown square; sandwiched between Lake Monona and East Washington Avenue.

Reasons to go: Willy Street is what defines Madison. Students, activists and artists all call this neighborhood home and their residence reveals the tailings of the ultra liberal, controversial movements that started in the early '60s and continue in Madison today.

This mix of old and new is reflected in the deeply dynamic choice of restaurants, bars and shops.

Reasons to eat there: Jamerica (Jamaican/vegetarian), Lazy Jane's Café and Bakery (breakfast/lunch), Roman Candle (pizza)

Best coffee shop or café: Mother Fool's Coffee Shop, 1101 Williamson St.

Reasons to shop there: Willy Street Co-op, 1221 Williamson St.; Red Sage Health, 1251 Williamson St.; Machinery Row Bicylces, 601 Williamson St.

Reasons to stop for drinks: Jolly Bob's, 1210 Williamson St.; Crystal Corner, 1302 Williamson St.; Weary Traveler Freehouse, 1201 Williamson St.

Hidden gem: A fully paved bike path runs along the train tracks just north of Williamson Street. The path starts at the intersection of John Nolen Drive and Williamson Street and heads east to Monona.

Good luck getting your bike across Williamson Street, though. That street has become insanely busy with traffic in the past eight years! That said, the bike path was very nice. We need something like that running from Bay and KK up to Pittsburgh Ave in Third Ward.
