1. Tanin looks back with "Natural Selection"
Published: Jan. 16, 2010 - 05:14 a.m. - Best known among Milwaukee musicians these days as one of the city's top mastering engineers, Gary Tanin is also a veteran local musician, songwriter and producer and his list of credits is a long one. In recent years, Tanin has worked to make much of his long-out-of-print oeuvre available on CD and his latest disc, "Natural Selection," is a retrospective of favorite tracks from his long career.
2. Put Portland on your road trip map
Published: March 31, 2009 - 3:47 p.m. - Portland has been called Milwaukee's West Coast sister city many times. The recipient of a constant influx of Wisconsin natives over the last 15 years, there's hardly a neighborhood you can visit without running into someone from the Midwest.
3. Powell taps Tanin again for solo piano project
Published: March 5, 2009 - 11:26 a.m. - It's a safe bet that Roger Powell -- who you know most likely from his work with Todd Rundgren's Utopia -- is not the guy you think of when you think of instrumental piano music. But that's exactly what his latest solo disc, "Blue Note Ridge" (on Fossil Poet Records), is. The record was co-produced and engineered by veteran Milwaukee musician, producer and engineer Gary Tanin.
4. Cory in the house: Brewers hire Provus for radio gig
Published: Feb. 15, 2009 - 9:52 p.m. - With pitchers and catchers already cavorting in Arizona, the Brewers announce Jim Powell's replacement today. Cory Provus, who worked for the Cubs, will sit next to Hall of Famer Bob Uecker.
5. Doc Powell had strong state ties
Published: Feb. 15, 2009 - 11:39 a.m. - Some readers might recognize Doc Powell as a contemporary jazz and R&B guitarist. Those with more of a sense of history will probably be familiar with the name as the "blood brother" of Buffalo Bill Cody and through Wild West tales.
6. Saturday Scorecard: "Introducing Mr. Hoffman..."
Published: Jan. 24, 2009 - 5:47 p.m. - More than 10,000 Brewers fans braved frigid temperatures and headed Downtown to attend the club's "On Deck" event Saturday at the Midwest Airlines Center. One of the highlights of the event, which included autographs, photos and clinics, was an introductory press conference by the team's new closer, Trevor Hoffman, who donned his new jersey and spoke at length about his new team, his leadership abilities and his theme song.
7. Powell's departure leaves me conflicted, bummed out
Published: Jan. 22, 2009 - 12:03 p.m. - A lot of people have asked me this week why I haven't written anything about the yet-to-be-announced departure of Brewers radio announcer Jim Powell to the Atlanta Braves. The truth is, that while I've known about it for some time, I couldn't write anything, since everything Jim -- who is more of a friend than a peer -- has told me, has been strictly off-the-record.
8. Brewers' Powell, Anderson applaud Kubek selection
Published: Dec. 9, 2008 - 4:40 p.m. - The announcement that Milwaukee native Tony Kubek won the Ford C. Frick Award for contributions to baseball broadcasting was very well received by a pair of current Milwaukee baseball broadcasters -- Brewers radio announcer Jim Powell and his TV counterpart, Brian Anderson.
9. Saturday Scorecard: Will the Packers soar or flop?
Published: Nov. 29, 2008 - 05:37 a.m. - The Packers (5-6) are neither as good as they looked two weeks ago against Chicago nor as bad as they looked Monday night in New Orleans. Their season-long inability to play solid defense at the point of attack is not a hallmark of a team destined for playoff success and could be a problem in a key matchup against Carolina Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field.
10. Destination known: Kusnierek goes to MLB Network
Published: Nov. 12, 2008 - 09:55 a.m. - The worst-kept secret in broadcasting is official: Trenni Kusnierek, who confirmed last week that she is leaving her sideline reporter's job with Fox Sports Wisconsin, will join MLB Network as a reporter.
11. Vasgersian accepts job with MLB Network
Published: Nov. 5, 2008 - 12:16 p.m. - Former Brewers TV announcer Matt Vasgersian is the first on-air personality hired by the fledgling MLB Network.
12. Brewers' Anderson lends familiar voice to playoffs
Published: Oct. 1, 2008 - 09:37 a.m. - It may take a few innings today for Brewers fans to get used to the idea of their team being in the playoffs, but at least there will be a familiar voice in the booth calling the action on the nationally televised broadcast.
13. Milwaukee Talks: Brewers radio announcer Jim Powell, 2008
Published: March 30, 2008 - 05:23 a.m. - There are only a few people who watch the Brewers as closely as Milwaukee radio announcer Jim Powell. And that's why we catch up with him each and every spring to get his take on the team's chances.
14. Wisconsin helped develop Grand Canyon explorer
Published: March 23, 2008 - 05:29 a.m. - John Wesley Powell is best known for taking the first river trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. But his sense of adventure and exploration were developed, at least for a few years, in Walworth County and elsewhere in Wisconsin.
15. A pleasant walk in the park
Published: March 2, 2008 - 5:06 p.m. - With the temperature in the 40s and the Brewers game on the radio, it was a great day to get outside. Tomorrow, it's back to the grind.

Published: Sept. 29, 2007 - 4:58 p.m. - Former Brewers TV announcer Matt Vasgersian, who called the Milwaukee-San Diego game for Fox, paid tribute to Bob Uecker on Saturday.
17. It's so nice to hear Vasgersian calling a Brewers game again
Published: June 30, 2007 - 3:21 p.m. - I could be wrong, but I think this is the first Brewers game that Vasgersian has called since he departed several years ago (not counting San Diego/Milwaukee matchups that I can’t watch locally).

Published: Jan. 11, 2007 - 05:33 a.m. - When he boarded a Milwaukee-bound plane last month in Texas, Brian Anderson wasn't sure he wanted to leave The Golf Channel and become the Brewers TV play by play announcer. One look at Miller Park quickly changed his mind -- and his life.

Published: Oct. 26, 2006 - 09:13 a.m. - As the dust settles from Daron Sutton's announcement to leave the Milwaukee Brewers TV booth for Phoenix, the obvious question becomes who will replace him. The fan in me has a few ideas -- some I like, some I don't.

Published: Sept. 29, 2006 - 05:20 a.m. - While former Utopia keyboardist Roger Powell and local musician/producer Gary Tanin, also on synthesizer, provide the bedrock of the "Fossil Poets" album, it is Milwaukee guitarist Greg Koch who makes it.
