With 12 games left in the season and hopes for a postseason berth slipping away after a nightmarish weekend series in Philadelphia, the Brewers fired manager Ned Yost today and replaced him with third base coach Dale Sveum.
"This was a very difficult move to make, and we appreciate all of the work that Ned has done to develop this team into a contender," Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin said in a statement.
"In the end, this was a collaborative decision made to put our club in the best position for the final two weeks of the season."
After playing spectacular baseball in August, the Brewers have lost 11 of their last 14 games and seen their wild-card lead dwindle from 5 ½ games to a virtual tie with the Phillies.
The Brewers begin a three-game series with first-place Chicago Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
Bench coach Ted Simmons has been reassigned to an advisotry role. Sveum has selected his best friend, Hall of Famer Robin Yount, to be his bench coach. Garth Iorg, who has been with the team the past few weeks, will coach third base.

Its the players that are not performing not the manager. I dont see how this move will help.

Well, We got Dale Sveum, Robin Yount. Let's bring back some more old Brewers as it is doubtful any of the coaches, even interm, except for Bill Castro, will be around next year. Amazing for a team battling for a wild card position to under go these many changes. It's not like the Tigers, spending a zillion and going no where or the Yankees. I wonder if Joe Torre is smiling.

Lets see if this helps their hitting. Not sure if it will... However, it just may.

I fear it might be a little too late for this move, I kinda wish they would've pulled the trigger back in May after that disaster in Boston. Granted the team seemed to respond but this late season swoon is all too familiar. I liked Yost as a manager and don't fault him for the mental breakdown of his bullpen and the lack of hitting (although I thought he made some poor decisions with the lineup card). As it is in most situations the lack of output from certain players is laid on the doorstep of the skipper. Ultimately I would love to see this team reinvent itself next year, big moves like trading Fielder for a top notch starter and a reliever, then cut loose Weeks, Cameron and 3/4ths of the bullpen. Turn into a small ball team less reliant on the home run. And bring back Don Money to coach third...Dollar Don. I hope that they can improve over the last two weeks and make the playoffs (I do have tickets) and think that this might be their best chance before they go back to rebuilding.

"This is a desperate move of a desperate team." why thank you Yinger the Obvious! i would reply desperate times call for desperate measures. win or lose this needed to be done. and this would be the 26th year not the 27th, unless you were already dsicounting next year.
