What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Dec. 21, 2008 at 2:35 p.m.
Tags: ymca, health club, fitness, new year's resolution

I am considering buying a YMCA membership for my family. The Y lowered their rates earlier this year, and it seems like a pretty good deal. However, even at $65 a month, I want to make sure my family and I will use it.

I worked at the Y for 10 years -- as a membership director and then as a Spinning instructor -- so I was spoiled by the free membership. My husband suggested I start teaching Spinning again to regain the employment perk, but that feels like too much responsibility right now. And way too much pony tail perkiness.

When I worked at the Y, I found it humorous how many people join every January to fulfill their New Year's resolution. These good-intentioned folks are diligent about working out until March, and then many of them fall off the face of the gym. I really don't want to land in this category, so I continue to ask myself whether or not I am ready for deeply committed Y membership or should just stick with my no-strings-attached home workouts.

Please do not contribute to the ridiclous "New Years resolution crowd" that comes around every year to get in our way & annoy the regular Y members for 2 months. If U think this could be U,wait until March to join. Thanks in Advance !

Absolutely! The Y recently dropped their prices and it is a great deal. I use it six times a week and log my workouts on the computer which also can be accesed from home. It will be the best present that you can give yourself.

Maybe you should ask if your family can get a free week trial and see how your kids adapt to the gym. If they really dig it, I think it's something worth doing for the whole family.

Nah. Just think about all the cool things that you can do without a gym membership... Borrow new exercise DVD's from the library...join a class that is located in a community center or join one courtesy of the Milwaukee Rec guide... go skiiing.. sledding.... even walking outside... All those things are free... I love supporting community organizations, but I personally feel that exercising in a gym feels so.... contrived. Just my two cents. :)

I guilt myself into going because I know I'm paying for it and hate wasting the money, so maybe that thought process will work for you too! But yeah, I might wait until February too. I can't stand how busy the gym gets in January with the 'resolutioners'.
