Keeping Sabathia will be tough enough without the newspaper writing out-of-context headlines. |

As if trying to sign CC Sabathia wasn't hard enough, it looks like the local paper may have helped make the Brewers' task a little harder this week.
Sunday's Journal Sentinel ran a story titled, "Yankees' offer baffles Melvin," though at no point does it quote Brewers General Manager saying that he was in any way baffled. Instead, it quotes Melvin saying, "It sounds like they're overbidding. If the speculation is true that we've offered CC $100 million, why would you offer $140 million? Why wouldn't you offer $110 million?"
Now, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy is reporting that Melvin hasn't heard back from the Sabathia's representatives. Maybe it's because they think the Brewers are "baffled" -- and not ready to step up and negotiate.
McCalvy wrote, "Melvin admitted he got a fair amount of reaction for his comment last week that the Yankees were 'overbidding' for Sabathia by exceeding the Brewers' offer -- the only other formal overture to Sabathia reported so far -- by such a significant amount. He took issue with a headline on a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report that said he was 'baffled' by the Yankees' offer."
"I wasn't baffled by what they are doing," Melvin told McCalvy. "I do think it's funny that the Yankees make their bid, and a couple of hours later it's on ESPN."
Hey Journal Sentinel, the Yankees don't need any additional help in poaching Sabathia. Please stick to the quotes and skip the editorializing in your headlines. Melvin's job right now is hard enough -- the last thing he needs is to have a newspaper start putting words in his mouth.

Doesn't matter what the headline said, Melvin still sounded like a whinining, sniveling little baby that the big, bad Yankees were outbidding them. He knew going in that the Santana contract would be the minimum bid for Sabathia. Step up to the plate or go home.

When you have the deepest pockets...there is no such thing as overbidding. Especially when you can afford to go after Lowe and Burnett too. Baby Stein is trying to make his mark on the franchise.

I follow Melvin's way of thinking on this one. The Yankees, at this point, basically have outbid themselves in the tune of, I would think, at least $20M. The Brewers offer $100M and the Yanks come back with $140M. Why didn't they just offer $120M? That's an extra $20M on the table, probably enough to offset any sort of discount he'd give the Brewers. Now what happens when CC comes back to the Yankees and says, "Nah, the Giants offered $130M, you'll have to go to $150 for me to waive the hometown discount". By initially going to $140M, the Yankees artificially set the bidding higher than it would have normally been set. Whatever, it's Steinbrenner's money, but it just didn't seem like a real bright negotiating technique. My only guess is that they thought they'd bowl over CC and he'd sign without listening to anybody else. But what agent would fall for that?

C'mon Andy, you know enough about baseball to know what the market for CC was going to be. I'm not a major league GM and even I could figure out that some team would offer CC a contract in line with the deal the Mets gave to Johan Santana last year. The Yankees have done exactly that. I'm not sure how Doug could think this was overbidding unless he's unaware of Santana's deal. If the fact that a team offered a deal like this causes Melvin to believe they are overbidding then he comes across as "baffled" to me. If the Brewers really wanted CC they should have offered a $100,000,000 deal at 4 years. Sure, it would not have been as much as the best bid would be, but it would be for one less year and allow CC to be a free agent again at 31. This is all about public perception. The Brewers want to make it seem like they are doing all they can to resign CC when they know their offer was not going to be anywhere near what the market would bear. I'm not sure it's a great idea to sign Sabathia, but seeing as though we'll be paying the trio of Cameron, Suppan and Hall $28,000,000 next year I'd be open to it as CC is actually a difference maker. Teams get into trouble when they give big money to marginal guys like Cameron, Hall and Soup and while it is risky to offer CC a massive deal you also know that he's capable of winning 8 or 9 more games than the average guy.

Don't ever look to the Journal/Sentinal for anything more than 24 hour Green Bay Packer pumping. That's all they know.
