Here are six things you might not know about Joe Winkelsas, the relief pitcher the Brewers promoted from Class AA Huntsville this week.

  1. He is 32 years old.
  2. He is not even listed in the minor-league section of the Brewers' 2006 media guide, because he signed after a tryout camp in Arizona and the book had already gone to press.
  3. Winkelsas is one of 10 players in major-league history to have played college baseball at Elon University, a small private school in North Carolina. (Others included Bunny Hearn, Cap Clark, Ted Abernathy, Ed Sauer, Tom Brewer, Dick Such, Greg Booker and Greg Harris).
  4. During the 1999 season, Winkelsas pitched one-third of inning for the Atlanta Braves. His third base coach at the time was Ned Yost, now the Brewers' manager. Winklesas' only appearance came against Arizona on April 10 at Turner Field. He allowed two runs, four hits and a walk and recorded his only out on a sacrifice bunt.
  5. After kicking around the minors and doing a stint in an independent league, Winkelsas was working as a garbage collector in his home town of Buffalo, N.Y. He was also working as a pitching coach at Niagara University, where he caught the eye of Brewers scout Tony Blengino during an intrasquad game. The Brewers invited him to a tryout in Phoenix and he was the player they signed.
  6. Winkelsas' career -- and his life -- were almost derailed by an addiction to marijuana.

Check out this excellent story from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and writer Kyle Hightower and this update from Adam McCalvy, who covers the Brewers for mlb.com.
