PHILADELPHIA -- When CC Sabathia walked off the field in the fourth inning of Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies in Game 2 of the NLDS, it was likely the last time Milwaukee fans will see Sabathia in a Brewers uniform.
He was acquired on July 7 from Cleveland in exchange for top prospect Matt LaPorta (another prospect, Michael Brantley, was added to the deal today, in an effort to give the team another weapon in its quest for a championship).
So the question to be pondered, now that Sabathia is headed for free agency with little chance of resigning in Milwaukee:
Was it worth it?
He went 11-2 during the regular season with a 1.65 ERA. Of his 17 starts (in which the Brewers were 14-3), seven were complete games -- the most in the National League. Three times in the final two weeks of the season, Sabathia pitched on short rest -- winning all three games, and holding Chicago to a run in a nine-inning effort on the season's final day that put the Brewers in the playoffs for the first time since 1982.
In the playoffs, Sabathia has been far less dominant and that trend continued Thursday against the Phillies, when he was tagged for five runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. His woeful offensive support played just as big of a role in putting the Brewers on the brink of elimination.
With the way Sabathia pitched for the last three months of the season -- even with the rest of his team collapsing around him -- the lefty was due for a roughing-up. Unfortunately, it came at the most inopportune time and in crucial situation. Doug Melvin took a big risk in getting Sabathia, and for the most part, it paid off.
So now the question is asked: Was the trade worth it? Does breaking a 26-year absence from the postseason warrant the departure of two of the franchise's best prospects? Or do you think that, because he failed to come through in the postseason, his regular-season accomplishments are meaningless.
