I grew up on Milwaukee's East Side, in a community of hippies and academics, so toy guns were a big no-no. I never even owned a squirt gun. In fact, when I asked my mother for one, she said "we don't like guns" and bought me a baton instead. I learned to twirl, but I always wanted to give shooting a whirl.
About five years ago, I spent time at a family member's cottage on Washington Island and, while my kids napped, we shot soda cans with a BB gun. It was incredibly fun, and surprisingly, felt quite satisfying. Turns out, my aim ain't too bad, either.
Although I have no intention of joining the NRA or packing on a regular basis, I am interested in shooting responsibly at a range and I'm wondering where I should go. Any suggestions for locations or tips for a novice?
Don't worry, Mom. I'll be careful.

http://www.dbcl.org/ Daniel Boone Conservation League. Unless you just want to shoot a hand gun indoors go here instead. Try shooting Trap or Skeet... it's fun. Plus, there is hiking trails and conservation for your hippie side.

Shhhh, don't tell the Mayor about your plans. Guns are bad....we need more restrictions on them. I hope the thug criminals follow these laws.....

Hi, The Shooters Shop and Badger Guns are both very good choices. I prefer taking new shooters to an outdoor range, though. Indoors, the sound and concussion of the guns is amplified and can make newbies a bit flinchy... plus if the ventilation isn't good, you can start to taste the gun powder smoke in the back of your throat... ick... Outdoors, McMiller Sports Center in Eagle is a great range! It's where my wife learned to shoot and where we took several of her girlfriends to learn to shoot. No matter where you choose to go, make sure that you're getting competent instruction on safety first and then technique second. My one complaint about Badger is that I've seen some unsafe gun-handling from other shooters at times. If you'd like, my wife and I would love to give you some basic instruction and take you shooting at McMiller.
