No precipitation in sight, yet the Miller Park roof is closed. |

It's a beautiful day here at Miller Park. The sun is trying to fight its way through the clouds, temperatures -- though nowhere near "balmy" -- are high enough to leave the parka at home, baseball is back for another go-round and nearly 50,000 people are throwing back beers in the middle of the day as the Brewers hold onto a 8-0 lead thanks to a pair of Bill Hall home runs.
What's the only thing wrong with this picture?
As usual, the Miller Park roof and outfield panels are closed. Why?
The roof is supposed to make baseball possible in inclement weather. As I check my trusty Weather Channel Desktop Gadget, the current temperature is 51 degrees. The radar shows nothing in the form of precipitation with a couple hundred miles of town.
Have we really, truly become so spoiled in this town that we can't tolerate a bit of a chill? It wasn't that long ago that we were cursing out Mother Nature for dropping 100 inches of snow and looking forward to the first opportunity to leave the house wearing just a sweatshirt.
It wasn't that long ago, either, that County Stadium was packed to the rafters on Opening Day in weather conditions that were too poor for even a football game.
Let's toughen up a little bit. The roof should only be closed if it's raining, snowing or if the temperature is under 30 degrees. If it looks like it might be cold, perhaps bringing a jacket, sweatshirt or blanket would be appropriate. It's been done before. Sure, the people spending gobs of money on suites and club seats won't like it, but they're usually not watching the game anyway.
Come on, Milwaukee. We're better than this.
