Now, it's basketball season
I'm over the Brewers and, for me, the Packers are the Packers. They never get me too high or low, and I've come to grips with their near dominant position in Wisconsin sports. I'm excited about the 4-0 start, Brett Favre's play and their chances, but Packer Mania just doesn't dwell deeply in my heart.
What does stoke my sports blood is basketball. And, Milwaukee, it's here. Beginning this week, the Milwaukee Bucks open practice. At noon on Saturday, Oct. 6, you get your first opportunity to check out the Bucks 2007-'08 squad when head coach Larry Krystkowiak and the Bucks host a free open practice at the Bradley Center. Seating is unreserved and doors open at 11:30 a.m. One hundred first row courtside seats will be raffled off for the event. So, don't miss this first chance to see Yi Jianlian and the rest of our Bucks.
It should be an entertaining and hopefully a winning season. Without last year's injuries and mid-season shakeups, the Bucks are positioned well and should compete in the NBA East.
As for college hoops, the madness begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Al McGuire Center as the Marquette men's and women's teams scrimmage and the men's team holds its annual dunk contest. Free, limited edition "Marquette Madness" throwback blue t-shirts will be distributed to all fans at the event.
The Panthers haven't announced their opening "Madness" event, but do have an exhibition game scheduled at the U.S. Cellular Arena. UWM will host UW-Parkside at 7 p.m. Nov. 1.
Hoop it up, Milwaukee.

Hey, upofan and TosaJimBob: I think you two are on to something. The best part of the NBA season for me is the All-Star game. It's fun to watch the best players on the same court competing against each other. The rest of the loooong 82-game season, however, consists of a lot of boring and untalented teams going at it (of which I don't watch, by the way). I think the NBA could eliminate all but 12 teams -- or three teams per division. Even that is stretching it, but my thought is that eight teams would get a little tiring to watch, over and over. There is just not a lot of talent for the amount of teams out there today. The NBA is full of teams consisting of just so-so players making millions. Like you said, upofan, "yawn."

The NBA....I can't imagine spending all that money to buy a ticket to watch a bunch of overpaid guys run up and down the court trying to outdo each other in hopes of making the highlights and getting more attention....college and even high school basketball is more entertaining

There's something to be said about quality coaching. Does the name Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Red Auerbach and John Wooden ring a bell? It'll be interesting to see how Larry K does as a coach. I'll be watching closely.
