Expect accolades for recently-retired Packers quarterback Brett Favre to roll in for the next few weeks. One honor worth mentioning is an article by Geoff Hobson on the Cincinnati Bengals' official Web site.
Favre's illustrious career got its start against the Bengals at Lambeau Field on Sept. 20, 1992. After Cincinnati nose tackle -- and former Wisconsin Badger -- Tim Krumrie fell on Don Majikowski's leg, it was Favre that came in and saved the day for Packers fans.
The then-unknown quarterback with the hard-to-pronounce last name was a long way from earning spots in the Packers' record books but earned a place in the hearts of the Lambeau faithful by throwing the game-winning pass to Kitrick Taylor with 13 seconds left.
The Bengals honored Favre in a statement released Tuesday. In it, team owner Mike Brown commented on Favre's legacy.
"I've seen NFL quarterbacks for over 50 years now, and Brett Favre would be in my top handful," Brown said. "He was a great passer-strong arm, quick release, accurate -- and he matched that ability with a competitive personality that made him even better."
For the record, Cincinnati has started 11 different players at quarterback since Favre's streak of 253 consecutive starts began on Sept. 27, 1992.
