It's official.
As reported by OnMilwaukee.com earlier this afternoon, Good Karma Broadcasting has purchased radio station WRRD (540 AM) from Salem Communications. That means that Milwaukee's ESPN Radio, which broadcasts on WAUK (1510 AM) during the day and WMCS (1290 AM) at night, will become 540 ESPN.
Steve "The Homer" True announced the switch at 5 p.m. on "The World's Greatest Sports Talk Show." That show and ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning," which were cut short in the winter months due to WAUK's daytime-only broadcast status, will air in their entirety after the switch.
"A consistent 24-hour station with the on-air quality of the 540 signal is only possible because of the loyalty that our advertisers, listeners, and other partners have shown us during our time in Milwaukee," said Craig Karmazin, Good Karma's president and CEO.
The switch will take place in February, when the station will begin simulcasting its programming on 540 and 1510/1290 in order to allow users to adjust to the switch.
Due to FCC restrictions, WAUK was only permitted to broadcast on 1510 AM from sunrise to sunset. That led Karmazin to strike a deal that allowed him to carry evening programming -- such as Marquette University basketball games and the BCS National Championship Game.
The format for 1510 AM will be announced at a later date.
