Minneapolis' all-woman quintet Sick Of Sarah is no stranger to the winner's circle in band contests. The group, which already won MTV's virtual Kaya's battle of the bands, also was named "best emerging artist" on Sunday, June 29 at Summerfest.
The group played that day at 4:15 p.m. and earned the title based on SMS votes submitted by the audience. Other bands vying on Sunday were Stukenberg, Cabin and Company of Thieves.
According to Summerfest's David Silbaugh, who coordinates the Emerging Artist Series, the 11 daily winners will each have a track on an upcoming CD. In addition, there are other prizes and perks that the winning bands get.
Silbaugh says each winner "walks away with a prize package worth nearly $3,000. A guitar, a snare drum, microphones, effects pedals, industry reference books, drumsticks and a Bluetooth headset are all a part of the package that is given to the 11 daily winners.
"Outside of all of that, there is a lot of additional promotion that is afforded the artists appearing in the series. ... Bands also benefit from television, radio and print media opportunities that develop throughout the duration of the festival."
Now, Sick of Sarah -- clearly influenced by bands like The Runaways and The Breeders -- gears up to release its self-titled debut disc, Aug. 12 on L.A.-based Adamant Records. The label discovered the band thanks to its MTV victory.
Sick of Sarah hits the road next month in support of the new record and plays at Shank Hall on Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. Cover is $10 and there will likely be a local artist opening.
