It's only the first day of Summerfest 2008, but the redesigned Harley-Davidson Roadhouse appears to be a hit.

The stage, located in the middle of the grounds and bordered by the Miller Lite Oasis and the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, often was marred by gridlock during previous festivals because of its configuration and heavy pedestrian traffic moving through the grounds.

The redesign, which began in October, made the area more spacious and added video screens, a VIP area and other amenities.

"It's double the size," Summerfest chairman and CEO Don Smiley said. "I think people are really going to like it. We started working on it in October and as with any major project like this, you always have concerns about how it's going to turn out. We're thrilled with it. It's going to be great to see people enjoying it."

During evening shows, access to the area behind the Roadhouse is limited, according to a security guard. That will cut down on congestion in the areas to the side of the stage, but could also eliminate a handy shortcut for people used to walking the western edge of the grounds.

Summerfest revamped the Miller Lite Oasis recently and other stages, particularly the Briggs area, could be next in line for an overhaul.
