I'm really not an old fogey. Old, maybe. But not a fogey. Yet I feel like one after watching Taylor Swift, the next big thing in country music, last night on the NBC special lighting the Christmas tree at Rockerfeller Center.
Josh Groban sang marvelously. Tony Bennett was 100 per cent class. And then came Taylor Swift.
She sang "Silent Night," arguably the greatest carol ever. At least I think it was "Silent Night." It had the words. But she had decided to give it her own take, which meant a tune that nobody had ever heard before.
She reminds me of Michelle Wie wanting to play golf against the men. Sometimes the adults in the entourage have to tell these child prodigies that the answer is "NO!"
I mean, "Silent Night." That's like some sophomore art student looking at the Mona Lisa and saying, "If we could just get the corner of her mouth to go up a little more."
