It turns out the USAirways oversold the flight, and when they asked if anyone wanted to be rerouted through Milwaukee, I sprung out of my seat and raised my hand.

After the game, we moved our base of operations to the Westin Kierland Resort, on the northern side of Scottsdale. A top-notch hotel, it’s quite different from our experience at the Hotel Valley Ho.

I figured that since I was up, I might as well check out the pool at the Hotel Valley Ho again. And that’s where I spent an hour doing something I rarely do on vacation: relaxing.

Wow, it’s nice to be back in Arizona. My morning began at 5:30 a.m., when I left Milwaukee for O’Hare. And we came at a great time. It was about 85 degrees and perfectly cloudless. This is what I spent the last 11.5 months dreaming about.

John Wesley Powell is best known for taking the first river trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. But his sense of adventure and exploration were developed, at least for a few years, in Walworth County and elsewhere in Wisconsin.

After our siesta, we headed back to Plaza Mayor and had dinner and drinks at one of the “mesones,” a 400-year-old cave-like restaurant that’s a local favorite for cheap dates. We wandered around the area a bit after dinner, watching the city come alive as it approached 11 p.m.

Bustling Madrid is as friendly as it is cosmopolitan

Spain put me in a better mood the moment we landed. Their metro is spotless, efficient, modern and easy to understand. It puts Paris to shame. Polite and helpful people surrounded us, including a woman who not only helped us lug our big, 50-pound suitcase up an endless flight of stairs, but who also directed us to our hotel.
