A fun day in the park with George

Now in his 80s, Stephen Sondheim has been taking victory laps the last few years. His genius is deservedly appreciated, and I doubt I will get any argument by calling him the greatest living composer of musical theater.
With its exquisite production of "Sunday in the Park With George," the Skylight Music Theatre is taking that further. It is showing us that Sondheim belongs in the discussion about America's greatest theatrical writers, along with O'Neill, Williams, Miller, August Wilson and Edward Albee.

Pizza by the slice shops have been on the East Coast for decades, but they are relatively new to Milwaukee. We may have been late to the party, but we have compensated for that with startling imagination and ingenuity in topping those slices.

Milwaukee's most peripatetic music director

Pay attention to the woman at the piano when you go to see the obscure Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt musical "Roadside" at Off the Wall Theatre. She has worked at a coal mine, been a practicing attorney, rides a motorcycle, plays video games and bicycles 37 miles on most days. But Donna Kummer's defining identity is as Milwaukee's most peripatetic music director.

Moving a restaurant from Fond du Lac to New Berlin

It's not all that unusual for a restaurant to pick up and move. North Star American Bistro migrated to a new space across Oakland Avenue in Shorewood a year and a half ago. Two venerable Milwaukee eateries, the Boulevard Inn and Chip and Py's, made cross-town moves before eventually closing. But a 70-mile relocation is definitely out of the ordinary. That is what Chris and Jennifer Giaimo have done with their Bellafini's Trattoria.

In Tandem Theatre Company's entertaining production of "Veronica's Position" evokes the frothy wit of Noel Coward.
Windfall Theatre has shown an affinity for Stephen Sondheim musicals during its 19 seasons, and it opens another, "Assassins," in the Village Church tomorrow night. The small company is getting the jump on the Milwaukee Rep, which mounts its production of the same musical in September. Youngblood Theatre Company has opened the satirical drama "Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom," in a Walker's Point basement.

They may be undergraduate theater students at UW-Parkside, but they are key contributors to the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre's pitch-perfect production of "Bus Stop" that opened last weekend. Seeing two bright young Wisconsin actors emerge is part of the fun going on in the Cabot Theatre at the Broadway Theatre Center. Director Lisa Kornetsky's deft staging makes William Inge's character-driven comedy fly 57 years after its Broadway debut.

Skylight takes novel approach to presenting new musical

Going all the way back to its founding visionary, Clair Richardson, the Skylight Music Theatre has a history of coloring outside the lines. Expect the unexpected from the plucky company. We will see an example of that tonight when the Skylight opens "Daddy Long Legs" in the Cabot Theatre at the Broadway Theatre Center.

Choose to see "The Chosen" at In Tandem Theatre

Writer-director Aaron Posner wrote a sleek and elegant stage adaptation of the 1967 novel "The Chosen" with the book's author, Chaim Potok, and In Tandem Theatre is giving the play a pitch-perfect production. The writing is taut and dramatic, the direction is smart and the acting is exceptional.

The story is not new. An ambitious fellow leaves home, moves to a different land, marries a local girl and settles down. He likes his adopted country but his taste buds crave the culinary delicacies of his youth. He complains to his wife that he can't find - fill in the blank - and decides to take matters into his own hands. He goes into business selling his favorite food with ingredients imported from the fatherland.

"Mary Poppins" pops into the Marcus Center

We should all have Mary Poppins occasionally drop into our lives to spread a little magic and jolt us out of our ruts. The good news is that she is here for a week, soaring over the Uihlien Hall stage at the Marcus Center. A national touring company of the musical theater version of "Mary Poppins" has settled in Downtown, and adults may be surprised by how much they will enjoy it.

When John Sidoff and his wife, Cindy, bought East Side landmark Von Trier in late 2009, he left no doubt about his intentions. There would be no food, except for the traditional popcorn and maybe some happy hour nibbles imported from an outside source. That raised a timely question yesterday. Why was I attending a tasting of the bar's small plates menu, scheduled to be rolled out in early March?

The ageless Ruth Schudson follows up her crisply precise and on-the-mark work in the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre's revival of "Driving Miss Daisy" with an equally impressive but very different performance.
Gershwin returns to the Skylight

The last time we saw Parrish Collier performing on the Cabot Theatre stage in the Broadway Theatre Center, he was playing an anarchist and part time philosophy professor whose cross-dressing lover was dying of AIDS. It was "Rent," the Skylight Music Theatre's final production of the 2009-10 season, and his voice was crushed velvet. Now he is back at the Cabot as a song and dance man in the service of George Gershwin and some of the composer's 1930s contemporaries. The show is a musical revue, "Gershwin and Friends," and the Skylight opened it last weekend.

It was the high point of Clements' impressive inaugural season. Now Posner is back at the Rep to direct "To Kill a Mockingbird."
