Stair Fair Park Chairman of the Board Martin Greenberg resigned today in a letter addressed to Gov. Jim Doyle and released to the media.

Susan Crane, the current vice chairperson, will serve as interim chair, according to Patrice Harris, public relations and communications director for the park.

"On February 3, 2003, I said yes to your appointment as Chairman of the Board of Wisconsin State Fair Park, fully intending that this would be a two-year fix," Greenberg wrote. "It has now turned out to be a five-year, full-time job."

Greenberg listed what he believed to be the park board's accomplishments during his tenure, noting, "our staff and Board have experienced underwater assets and bankrupted structures that threatened the historical granddaddy of the State of Wiscosnin. We, as a team, did it. We fixed by sale. We fixed by financial restructuring. We fixed by licensing. We fixed by undertaking good business practices."

Among the accomplishments, Greenberg listed:

  • Creating a Peoples' Park.
  • Increasing revenues while decreasing costs.
  • Bringing financial and public accountability.
  • Privatizing the Milwaukee Mile.
  • Financially restructuring the Wisconsin Exposition Center.
  • Releasing the Olympic training facility "from State bondage."
  • "Preserving the integrity of a State Fair that remains one of the best in the country."

Greenberg noted, however, that "the job is not complete."

Greenberg's resignation is effective today.
