After more than a year on the now defunct Rivals.com network, The Brew Crew Review has "come home" to OnMilwaukee.com.
I write "come home" because unlike Rivals, which was based in Seattle and run by people who could barely find Milwaukee on the map, and cared little about it when they did, OMC is run by guys who love this town and understand its people.
That makes it a perfect place for the Review, which reports on the Milwaukee Brewers for fans who really care about the team, and are thrilled by the new digs in Miller Park and the encouraging play thus far this season.
Here's what you can find on The Brew Crew Review. On Mondays and Fridays, this column will be posted and will give perspectives and inside information on players, trends, etc. We also will select a Player and Pitcher of the Week and Play of the Week on Fridays. Periodically, we might even include a Goat of the Week and Blooper of the Week.
You won't find detailed game stories on the Review, but this column will review and preview games twice a week. Brief summaries of home games will be posted on the Message Board.
Yes, there is a Message Board, which was very popular when the Review was on Rivals. Hit it and hit if often to give your opinions. You also will be able to vote in polls and take part in quizzes.
When Rivals filed for bankruptcy, I thought of folding the Review, but I'm convinced it will do better than ever as part of OnMilwaukee.com.
Cubs Coming To Miller
The Brewers open a four-game series against their I-94 Rivals, the Chicago Cubs, at Miller Park Monday night. The teams also meet in night games Tuesday and Wednesday and wrap up the series Thursday with a day game.
Fans in Friday's Front Row and the .300 Club better get ready for some action when Sammy Sosa comes up. Sosa traditionally feasts on Milwaukee pitching.
The Cubs are leading the NL Central and scored 20 runs in a game Saturday, but they're pretenders, not really contenders.
Look for their pitching to go south by the All Star break. Todd Hundley and Rondell White will break down. Bill Mueller is the best third baseman they've had in years, but he won't hit at a .350 clip for the full season. Matt Stairs needs to stand on some to be a decent target at first base.
There already is potential for dissension. Pitcher Tom Gordon has said he wants to be traded if he can't be the fulltime closer. Pitcher Julian Tavarez has been disciplined for anti-gay remarks in San Francisco and his role in a brawl in spring training.
Brewers' fans might remember Julian as the guy who threw at Mike Matheny in the infamous Albert Belle brawl game a few years ago.
Believe me, it's only a matter of time before the Cubs become the Cubs, the lovable losers again. So, you'd better take advantage of a rarity -- a Brewers and Cubs series that actually could turn out to be for first place.
Hold The Fort
The Brewers need to hold the fort for about 10-12 days. Then, Geoff Jenkins, Mark Loretta and Jeff D'Amico should be close to coming off the disabled list.
Devon White and James Mouton are filling in for Jenkins, who is on the disabled list with a sprained shoulder. Richie Sexson, Jeromy Burnitz and Jeffrey Hammonds have to pick up the offensive slack.
Loretta likely will go out on rehab this week or early next week, and then force a decision on what to do with Jose Hernandez. Loretta will probably get his starting shortstop position back, with Hernandez splitting his time at short and third base.
D'Amico reportedly is making progress with his compressed nerve problem above his right elbow. He was expected to be ready later this month.
Sexson was hit in the knee by a pitch Sunday and left the game, but the injury was not considered serious. Sexson was listed as day-to-day.
The Weekend Wrap
After starting the road trip by taking two of three at Atlanta -- the first series win ever against the Braves -- the Brewers dropped two of three to the Florida Marlins over the weekend.
Jamey Wright, who threw a masterpiece in his last outing, did not have his best stuff Friday night and was cuffed around in a 9-6 loss. Cliff Floyd had two homers for Florida.
The Brewers bounced back for a 8-2 win on Saturday. Veteran righthander Mark Leiter, who has been filling in for D'Amico, won his first game since 1998. Hernandez continued to provide power hitting with a tape measure homer to center field.
Florida took the rubber game on Sunday, 5-1. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Haynes gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings.
In addition to publishing The Brew Crew Review on OnMilwaukee.com, Gregg Hoffmann writes a Milwaukee pro sports buzz column for OMC and has been covering the Bucks with special playoff columns. He is a veteran journalist and the author of "Down in the Valley: The History of Milwaukee County Stadium."
