I am not sure where I live--either the east side or downtown. I'm unsure because OMC considers Harry's on Oakland a "suburban" bar, so I don't feel like I'm expert enough to comment on my personal geography.
That said, there are pros and cons to living here. I enjoy the proximity to great shopping, the PAC, The Rep, The Third Ward, etc. I also enjoy the restaurants, Jazz in the Park, and the fact that I can be at the airport in under 10 minutes. Parking is very accessible and easy to find virtually anywhere in Milwaukee.
That said, living downtown is much more expensive than living in the sticks. Taxes are roughly double here what they would be in any suburb outside of Milwaukee County. The schools obviously are a challenge. Violent crime is not so much of an issue, but theft and vandalism are problematic.
I live here now and I enjoy it, but as soon as we have children, we have agreed to leave Milwaukee County. My wife can work anywhere, and I would rather commute to Milwaukee a time or two week for things that only it can offer, rather than have my children grow up here
