What I always say, "what do I need another free crappy t-shirt for?" Everyone 'including adults' get all excited when they are throwing out these promotional items. I make a point to just remain calm and disinterested. Maybe this is a good example for your kids. I don't have any kids so maybe I am wrong. But if I did I think I would love it if I heard them say, "What do we need another free crappy t-shirt for. Can't you buy one of those for $5 in the store then I can get the correct size anyway."
