For Sarah Brittman, life on either side of the bar suits her well. The easy-going barkeep has intense , blue eyes, an easy smile and the gift of conversation. The combination of these traits, along with her ability to pour a good drink, keep the regulars coming back to both of her establishments.

Riverwest residents turned out en masse this week to oppose the re-opening of Smokey's, 2425 N. Dousman St. Neighbors pointed out that there are four bars in a two-block stretch of Dousman -- which is similar to what opponents in Bay View said about a proposed sports bar -- but they were told, in essence, "if you don't like it, you shouldn't have moved into the area."

It was a conversation sparked by McBob's Bar and Grill. If you've never been, McBob's is part Irish tavern, part sports bar but mainly a local joint drawing a hefty portion of the surrounding Washington Heights neighborhood. They serve heaping mounds of corned beef, Irish beers on tap plus great deals on giant tacos.

For the third year in a row, OnMilwaukee.com readers picked Nessun Dorma as Riverwest's best bar. The pub -- which is also a popular restaurant -- offers 80 different kinds of beer and lager, as well as a few dozen types of wine by the glass or bottle, including red, white, sparkling, sake and more.

Barry Lewis will open The Groove in Bay View in December in the old Clowning Around space. He and a team of artists, designers and trades people are completely remodeling the building.
