Steve Hawthorne doesn't just buy beans for Milwaukee's Stone Creek Coffee Roasters. He could do that by phone or by e-mail with most of the world's coffee farmers. But until Hawthorne sees these farms first hand, in person, he can't know for sure that they meet his company's exacting standards for quality and ethics.

I can't say I was particularly enthusiastic to try out the souvenir my friend Eron brought back from a trip to Bali. The package of "Kopi Luawk," was sold to him as "poo-poo coffee," and its name is unfortunately not somehow lost in translation.

Of all the beverages people consume, typically only wine and coffee get a ton of scrutiny from the masses. It's not uncommon to see wine graded and scored at liquor stores, but only Milwaukee's Stone Creek Coffee Roasters has expanded the practice to coffee.
