What you get to see, if you go to "Sing Me a Story," is two unbelievably polished performers, gems of the Milwaukee theatrical community, kicking back and indulging their theater-geekiness (and that is said with admiration, believe me).

"Assassins," Stephen Sondheim's provocative, incisively witty composition, is running now at the Quadracci Powerhouse. The plot is centered on nine presidential assassins and delves into their personal characters, beliefs and motivations through a powerful score that is haunting at times and buoyant at others. Musical director Dan Kazemi explains the power of music in the theater.

Sometimes a play thinks it is bigger than it is. Then there are the other plays, smaller, that drag an audience into the world of passionate discussion without preaching or proselytizing. That's "Assassins," which opened to an appreciative crowd at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's Quadracci Powerhouse Friday night.

Windfall Theatre has shown an affinity for Stephen Sondheim musicals during its 19 seasons, and it opens another, "Assassins," in the Village Church tomorrow night. The small company is getting the jump on the Milwaukee Rep, which mounts its production of the same musical in September. Youngblood Theatre Company has opened the satirical drama "Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom," in a Walker's Point basement.

Forty years ago a Milwaukee Journal editor was in New York on business, and he decided to spend some free time in a Broadway theater. Growing up in the small upper peninsula Michigan town of Hubbell, Paul Salsini had little opportunity to see professional theater, but he got his hands on a cast album of "South Pacific" when he was in the eighth grade. It whetted his appetite for Broadway musicals. Salsini chose to see Stephen Sondheim's "Follies" on that night in 1971. The decision changed his life, and it had a small but interesting impact on American theater.
