Local restaurants treasure the artichoke
If ever a vegetable were to have a cult-like following, it would be the artichoke. It's true: lovers of this big thistle plant are emphatic about it, whether the "heart" is chopped and served on pizza and in hot dips or the entire plant is hard boiled and devoured. Milwaukee's best vibe/view, 2009: Alterra at the Lake
This year, we combined two previously separate categories: "view" and "vibe/atmosphere." Being a new category, we can hardly say the winner -- Alterra at the Lake -- came as a surprise. But it did because in 2008, Roots was the clear winner in both categories. That makes it curious that Roots didn't nab the combined category.

Milwaukee's best new restaurant, 2009: Honeypie
Opening in May 2009, Honeypie Café re-claimed the Bay View space formerly occupied by Annona Bistro. The home-style eatery is a joint effort by restaurateurs Scott Johnson, Leslie Montemurro and Adam and Val Luck.

Stars basking in glow of Iron Horse Hotel lately
Everyone is feeling sorry for "The Bachelor" Jason Mesnick and his Milwaukee-based girlfriend Molly Malaney. Last week, AirTran gave them flights so they can see each other and this week we hear that the Iron Horse Hotel invited the couple in for a rendezvous and the pair has taken the Walker's Point hotel up on its generous offer.

The Iron Horse Hotel rears up in Walker's Point
The Iron Horse Hotel, 500 W. Florida St., is within sight of the new Harley-Davidson Museum, but while the hotel will be a mix of chic and chrome and will cater to upscale business travelers and the leather-clad biker set -- often that's the same customer -- don't call this a biker hotel.
