Move over, microbreweries. Steve Johnson and Maria Milano, owners of Parallel 44 and Door 44 wineries, represent the new generation of Wisconsin farmers. People said they were crazy to start a vineyard in the Badger State, but with Parallel 44's recent awards and the designation of the Wisconsin Ledge AVA, wine in Wisconsin is making more and more sense.

Thanks to our climate, it's unlikely Wisconsin will ever become a wine lover's destination, although with Bordeaux winemakers buying up land in the south of England thanks to global warming, who knows! But that doesn't mean that some hearty Dairylanders aren't giving oenology the old college try. Here are some of the wineries closest to Southeastern Wisconsin.

If you want to get a closer look at Wisconsin wineries, two of them -- Parallel 44 and Stone's Throw -- offer ways to learn more. Kewaunee's Parallel 44 has a Barrel Club that lets you make your own wine and Stone's Throw hosts a Milwaukee-area tasting event on Sept. 16.
