One Milwaukee gardener takes it to the roof
Erik Lindberg created Milwaukee's first rooftop based Community Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) after converting the roof of a woodshop near 6th St. and Capitol Drive. With a local cabinetmaker still utilizing the downstairs shop, Lindberg built six raised soil beds plus a large composting pile up top.

It's easier than you might think to buy food locally
Simply put, the CSA system connects local farmers with local consumers who become members or shareholders of the CSA by financing the farm's whole seasonal budget, including seeds, tools, maintenance and land payments. In return, they get weekly or monthly baskets of fresh, organic produce, fruits, flowers, herbs, eggs, milk -- anything the farm can produce.

Can you taste the difference between organic and non-organic foods?
Not wanting your produce or ingredients scoured in chemical-laden pesticides in obvious. And the eco-reasons for supporting organics are many. But my question is, can you taste the difference between organic food and non-organic food?

One of the biggest issues concerning the green movement is the source of food. We've all heard the staggering stats; that in the U.S., our food travels an average of 1,500 miles via various modes of gas-guzzling transportation before it reaches our plates. The lesson to take away from this? Eat locally, as much as is possible.

Daily dish: Mashed potatoes and turnips with sautéed onions and greens
Just before the summer season this year, we committed to joining a local CSA, which stands for community supported agriculture. We chose Pinehold Gardens, a 21-acre CSA farm in Oak Creek. For the past 18 weeks we have received hearty vegetable shares, the contents of which shift with the changing harvesting season.
