A hideous crime spree in the suburbs
The stretch Bluemound Road between Mayfair Road and 111th Street features some of the butt-ugliest buildings in the history of architecture.

Do you feel safe at Mayfair Mall?
When shopping this holiday season, do you feel safe at Mayfair Mall? Has the fear associated with the muggings and attacks of a few years ago been assuaged by security measures? Would you still opt to shop elsewhere?

Venturi's Market preps homestyle meals at family style prices
Opening 12 years ago and expanding into a second storefront three years later, Venturi's Market is tucked away on the 7200 block of W. North Avenue, sandwiched by Snap Fitness and Chinese Pagoda restaurant. The café and deli originally opened with Italian flavors in mind but over the years, they've expanded to carry fresh meats and cheeses, specialty canned and packaged goods along with made-from scratch deli items of all sorts.

Talking West Side Amtrak blues
Talking about Amtrak this morning with a co-worker, I wondered aloud why there's no stop for the Amtrak train in Wauwatosa. The trains already pass through, why not let them pick up and drop off some folks?

Two events make for a great Milwaukee weekend
Chilly or not, rainy or not, this weekend is the kind of weekend that makes the Milwaukee summer great for me. At some point this weekend, we'll hit two festivals on our side of town. First up is the church festival at Sts. Connie and Helen in Wauwatosa, which is now one of my favorites.

Shift switch: My night as a server at George Webb

Shopping in Tosa's quaint downtown village
Downtown Wauwatosa has always been a charming pocket of the city, and long-standing locally owned businesses like The Little Read Book and restaurants like Ristorante Bartolotta have helped pave the way for what it's become in recent years.

Scouting report: Le Reve
In summer 2008, Andrew Schneider and Therese Hittman opened a two-tiered, French inspired bistro and patisserie in the heart of Wauwatosa. Le Reve, 7610 Harwood Avenue, pairs a sleek, contemporary dining environment with a small, well-thought-out menu and wine and beer selection; but the main attraction at Le Reve is undoubtedly their vast pastry and dessert selection which taunts diners from the far reaching glass case on the first floor.

Colonel Hart's serves a history lesson with libations
History is a natural topic of conversation at Colonel Hart's, 7342 W. State St., because the bar is named for Wauwatosa's first settler -- Charles Hart -- and the walls and tabletops are filled with sports memorabilia from the glory days of the Brewers, Bucks, Badgers, Packers and Marquette. While it was never flashy and hasn't changed a lot in the past 20-plus years, the bar feels as comfortable as a pair of old jeans.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
