On the town in Milwaukee: Beer spoiled or selection savvy?
Maybe it's this city's German heritage or the boisterous obsession with microbrews, but in Milwaukee, Belgian rarities are more and more the norm. Long lists of authentic Belgian and German brews are standard at places like the Palm Tavern, Sugar Maple, Roman's Pub and Von Trier. Café Centraal stocks nearly 90 beers, each paired with its namesake glass.

Happy birthday Sugar Maple
Being 100 percent smoke-free certainly has not stunted Sugar Maple's growth. Although still a member of the minority in the Milwaukee bar scene, the Bay View beertopia can breathe easy as it reaches an important milestone in April: its first birthday.

Milwaukee's best smoke-free bar 2009: Water Buffalo
There are not a whole lot of entirely smoke-free taverns to choose from, but it's clear that the list is growing and growing and next year we wager that there will be at least twice as many vying for position in the readers' poll. But this year, you dear readers have chosen Third War bar and restaurant Water Buffalo as your favorite smoke-free place.

Milwaukee's best beer list, 2009: The Bomb Shelter
It used to be a relatively simple matter of Miller, Pabst, Schlitz or Blatz. These days, Milwaukee bar owners have to stock a big selection to keep customers happy. In the opinion of OnMilwaukee.com readers, The Bomb Shelter, 1517 S. 2nd St., owns the best beer list in town. At last count, the bar offered 187 beers. If you're thirsty for something that comes in a boot, beer stein, glass or goblet, Bomb Shelter has got you covered.

Smoke-free bars breathe easier as trends shift
Unlike Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Madison, the lack of an official smoking ban in the city of Milwaukee places the decision to allow patrons to light up on business owners. Until recently, the number of bars and restaurants willing to tamper with tradition was minimal, at best.

Milwaukee's best bar district, 2009: Bay View
The fact that Bay View won the readers' choice award for best Milwaukee bar district really says something about this up-and-coming neighborhood. Five years ago, you'd find plenty of bars in the South Side neighborhood, but almost everyone who patronized them lived down the street.

Beer tasting for the ladies
The beer tasting I attended last Sunday at Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave., was different. This one was just for women, and was hosted by Sugar Maple co-owner Adrienne Pierluissi.

A who's who of Bay Viewers shows up for Sugar Maple opening
I'd imagine that Wednesday evening isn't the night most Milwaukeeans hit the bars, even in thirsty Bay View. But if I didn't know better, I would've thought last night was a Saturday at the grand opening of Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
