St. Pat's Tuesday sends me to Irish culinary heaven
St. Patrick's Day on a Tuesday was lovely because it meant we didn't have to fight the crowds to get our food. I know Ireland isn't known for its food, but some of the offerings you can get in Milwaukee on this holiday would definitely make you think otherwise.

St. Patrick's Scene: The Irish Pub and Slim's
One of the small perks of my job at OnMilwaukee.com is my office that I share with the rest of the editorial team. It's a big, bright sunny room with three gigantic windows that overlook the hub of the East Side: the intersection of North and Farwell Avenues.

St. Patrick's Scene: Paddy's and Hooligan's, part two
Five hours after my initial inspection, the East Side has done an "Irish 180." The streets are no longer quiet. Overgrown leprechauns are stumbling around North Ave., and given the unseasonably warm temperatures, it feels a little like the first day of Summerfest out there, but greener.

St. Patrick's Scene: Flannery's
How do you like your Lucky Charms -- topped with green Miller Lite or Guinness? Don't laugh -- it's a question that came into play this afternoon during a contest at Flannery's, 425 E. Wells St.

St. Patrick's Scene: McGillycuddy's
I had the honor of joining Kramp & Adler live on the radio this morning at McGillycuddy's, which was the most happening bar on Water Street. The bartender never stopped tapping the potent green stream into plastic pitchers, and the drinkers not only filled the bar, but spilled out onto the patio as well.

St. Patrick's Scene: Paddy's and Hooligan's
I expected to see the normal mobs of drunken St. Paddy's Day revelers on my way into work, clogging up North Avenue and filling my office parking lot. But other than one girl, dressed in green from head to toe, the streets were devoid of shenanigans and plenty of good parking was still available at 8:30 a.m.

Video of the Day: Holiday greetings from U2
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, we unearthed this message from U2 to MTV. And, to counterbalance the old clip, we added some recent clips from the band's week long residency with David Letterman.

Happy Birthday, Michael Cudahy
Since it's his birthday, I wanted to revisit a 2002 lunch I had with Michael Cudahy. Please enjoy this interview and let's all remember to sing "Happy Birthday" to a great, civic-minded Milwaukeean, Michael Cudahy. Cheers!

St. Patrick's Scene: McBob's
St. Patrick's Day started early at McBob's Pub & Grill, 4919 W. North Ave., Tuesday morning. It also started without great fanfare. Moments after the doors opened at 8 a.m. at this West Side favorite, a couple dozen people were already at the free Irish breakfast buffet, which lasts until 10 a.m. and included scrambled eggs, soda bread and Irish stew.

Know your Irish whiskeys
Whether it's the taste, versatility or just thanks to an amazing marketing department, Jameson has become the No. 1-selling Irish whiskey in the United States and the world. It's a popular choice among bartenders and shot seekers, but that certainly doesn't make it the only choice.

Irish pub guide
Many Irish immigrants settled in Milwaukee over the years, and a number of neighborhoods were identified as "Irish." The result is a thriving Irish Fest and a plethora of fine pubs pouring Guinness, Harp, Murphy's and more.

The most wonderful night of the year (for a cocktail)
The discussion cropped up in the editorial office the other day and we thought it would make a good discussion for Thanksgiving Eve. What is your favorite night of the year to enjoy a social drink? Is it tonight, which has a "reunion" vibe? Is it New Year's Eve, St. Patrick's Day or Opening Day, which have a "see how long you can stand" vibe? Is it Halloween, which has an "incognito" vibe? Or, is it another night that strikes your fancy?

The week in local music: March 17, 2008
It's St. Patrick's Day in the United States, so we know you're going out; it's only a matter of where. Just about every bar and restaurant in the city has the good business sense to capitalize on this booziest of holidays, but how many of them have live Irish music actually worth listening to?

A stout story
More stout flows around St. Patrick's Day than at any other time in the U.S. So, it's the perfect time to consider the story of our favorite dark beer.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
