But these days the place is as vibrant ever, thanks to some recent tweaks, and with the addition of kitchen veteran Andy Phillips.

Cool Water's excellent food deserves better service
After a few visits to Cool Water Bar and Grill, 2247 E. St. Francis Ave., St. Francis, the evolving concept seems confusing -- but not in a bad way. The simple truth is, Cool Water has a great kitchen and great product, but it needs to step up the service.

Carleton Grange summons a bit of the old country
Couple a home cooking feel with the beautiful, relaxed scene in the beer garden and I suspect Carleton Grange has found a new permanent home in quaint St. Francis.

Opinion: Rural Waukesha County does disappearing act

Polonez serves the heartiest of Polish comfort foods
In St. Francis, you'll find such a destination in Polonez (4016 S. Packard Ave.), a no-nonsense yet traditional restaurant that will stuff you full every time. If you look up "comfort food" in the dictionary, there ought to be one of those pen-and-ink sketches of Polonez.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
