Milwaukee's best use of local food, 2009: Roots
Roots Restaurant and Cellar was one of Milwaukee's first dining destinations to actively pursue the use of local ingredients. Using only naturally raised meats and fresh seafood from the start, they've evolved to mainly use produce grown in Wisconsin, too.

Milwaukee's best vegetarian, 2009: Beans & Barley
Milwaukee's vegetarian dining options expanded in the past decade, and yet, the classic East Side establishment Beans & Barley gets the gold. Beans serves up a variety of veggie items, including the tempeh reuben, grilled cheese, balsamic tofu sandwich, grilled vegetable sandwich and Mexican dishes.

Local co-ops unruffled by arrival of Whole Foods, Trader Joe's
Whole Foods opens in Milwaukee today, and most would agree, it's a positive addition. But will Whole Foods and Trader Joe's adversely affect already-existing local co-ops? Members and employees of The Outpost, Beans & Barley and the Riverwest Co-op don't think so.

The first-ever Riverwest Follies Variety Show takes place Saturday, March 4 at St. Mary Czestochowa, 3055 N. Fratney St., at 7 p.m. Flag Dancer Sura Faraj -- along with many other unqiue talents -- will be there.
