Gig roundup: Schneider previews ninth CD at Shank
Although Bob Schneider was the great, underrated drummer for Semi-Twang and The R&B Cadets -- among other local bands -- he's not the Bob Schneider headlining Shank Hall on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. This Schneider is well known to fans of alternative Americana folk-rock for the eight full-length discs that have helped him nab numerous Austin Songwriter of the Year awards.

Presidents show they're still the ticket
For a band that, despite periodic breakups, has maintained a tight and unique sound since its post-grunge Seattle heyday, the Presidents put on a solid show that mixed old and new -- to an appreciative, if not sold-out, crowd.

Energized Hanson rocks out The Rave
They didn’t perform “MMMBop.” I was waiting for it to come up during the acoustic set in the middle, but it just never did. Some people may have been missing The Song, but they really got more than enough from the rest of the show. Mmmwho?

Stylish and shy, Interpol left a lasting mark
One would be hard-pressed to find another new band so stylish, and yet so shy. A band so introspective, and yet so punk at its roots. A band so oft-compared to others, yet so unique.

Interpol, Fratellis make Milwaukee fans choose
What to do? The new new wave is washing over Milwaukee on Monday and I can only be in one place at a time. Since I'm already committed to seeing The Fratellis at The Pabst, I can only wish there was also a way to see Interpol at The Rave, too.

24-piece Polyphonic Spree whips up sheets of sound at Rave
I'm struggling to compare this 24-piece band to anything I've ever seen. The band calls itself "choral symphonic rock," and if I didn't know better, I'd call it borderline cultish in nature.

!!! lives up to the excitement of its name
!!! (pronounced ChkChkChk in most circles) had a lot of things scoring against them tonight, and I was curious to see if the dance-punk-rock-funk group would actually be able to rescue my attitude from the coal mine into which it had descended. As the evening rolled in I was wondering if the pulsating rhythms even stood a chance.

!!! begs participation
The bottom line, though is that !!! should be quite adept at getting the dance floor moving. If you're in the mood for dancing, head out to The Rave Thursday, May 10, at 8 p.m. If you're not in the mood, head out there anyway and I'm sure they'll change your mind.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
