Patrolling the Summerfest grounds with MPD
When most patrons think of security at Summerfest, they probably first conjure up thoughts of the burly "red shirts" patrolling the grounds. But uniformed cops are there at all times, providing backup, ready to act if things get out of hand for the unarmed security. Last Friday, we did a "walk along" with two of these Milwaukee officers.

The $84 interview
According to the Shorewood Police Department, I made an illegal u-turn this morning on the way to conduct an interview for an upcoming article on OnMilwaukee.com. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but if I'm unsuccessful in fighting the ticket, I'll owe Shorewood $83.80 and lose three points on my license.

Alderman wants focus put on squad car cameras
The Milwaukee Police Department has been lax in installing cameras in squad cars, even though it has been given the green light to do so and has equipment lying around ready to get our men in blue on the contributors' list for the "Cops" TV show. The city would have about 200 cameras if it gets a grant for 46 more. Only 67 have been installed and are functional, according to the department. Another 37 have been installed but are not functional.

Should people who don't return their library books have the book thrown at them, or is this making a crime out of something that's not?

Give the public a little good news
Surely something good must be happening in a city of nearly 600,000 people. The reason we know that is because every member of the Milwaukee Police Department lives in the city of Milwaukee.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
