What a difference a year makes
With the Brewers in the running for the playoffs, last fall's work day included plenty of Brewers talk and field trips to the Palomino to watch the games.

Pose with the Bronze Fonz, get a free beer
Palomino's running a contest through September called "Franz & Fonz." Bring in a photo of yourself with the Bronze Fonz statue and get a free Franziskaner. Plus, you might win a $75 gift card. That gets a Fonzie thumbs up. Ayyyyyy.

Where to get "tots" in this town
Few items on the school lunch menu appeal to adults, but Tater Tots are one of those timeless comfort foods. The crispy, potato cylinders make great fry alternatives, classic casseroles and, for some, serve as the perfect hangover remedy. Here's where to get 'em in Milwaukee.

On the town in Milwaukee: Do you join in on "Sunday funday?"
Where Sunday was previously reserved for recovery and respite in time for work Monday morning, someone coined the "Sunday funday" slogan, effectively adding another night of late night social drinking to the weekend.

Bars plate the push for beefy burgers and faux-meat wings
From greasy grub to full "book-style menus," Milwaukee's bar food is diverse and plentiful. In the last 10 years, full in-house kitchens or make-shift food options have come to be expected at bars; permitting drinkers to savor in a copious variety of menu styles, culinary blends and late-night service hours.

Best bar in Bay View, 2009: Palomino
Good is an understatement for 2009's top vote getter: Palomino, 2491 S Superior St. It's not the oldest bar in the neighborhood, but it's one of the first to pull in drinkers from all over the city. Flanked by Cactus Club and Club Garibaldi, it's on the hypotenuse of the neighborhood's little triangle of cool.

Bingo at the 'Mino
I've never worked at a bar, but based on empirical evidence, I'm guessing that Mondays are, generally speaking, slow nights in the tavern business. Maybe it was the $1 cans of PBR and Tecate that brought in a good crowd to the Palomino last night. But I'm guessing it was mostly the free bingo.

Best happy hour, 2009: Rascals
The home of the "$1 Happy Hour," allows you to kick back after work with mixed drinks and beers for a buck every night of the week. Rascals draws plenty of regulars and streams of college students for one of the liveliest, happiest happy hours in town.

Milwaukee's best bartenders, 2009: Palomino
A good bartender is hard to find. Here in Brew City, suds slingers come a dime a dozen (they almost have to with the number of bars, taverns, clubs and pubs we have) and most of them get the job done. But how often do you walk away, drink in hand, with the rare but distinct feeling of being truly taken care of by your barkeep?

Milwaukee's best bar district, 2009: Bay View
The fact that Bay View won the readers' choice award for best Milwaukee bar district really says something about this up-and-coming neighborhood. Five years ago, you'd find plenty of bars in the South Side neighborhood, but almost everyone who patronized them lived down the street.

Are bars recession-proof?
With Atomic shutting down and now the news that after 82 years, Schwartz Bookshops will close in the Milwaukee area, I wondered if the old adage that says bars (and perhaps bar / restaurants) are recession-proof is true. So, I asked someone who oughta know.

Johnson, Montemurro plan cafe in Annona space
If you were bummed out when Annona Bistro closed in October, take solace in knowing that a new restaurant will soon take its place. Though the new restaurant doesn't have a name yet, chances are it'll be good -- because it's set to become the latest venture from Scott Johnson and Leslie Montemurro.

On the town in Milwaukee: What's your local hotspot?
There is plenty of neighborhood pride on the East Side, in Riverwest and in Bay View. Not to mention outlying suburbs. But, I was a bit of a junkie for Bay View last weekend. Here's a take Bay View spots, and a question: do you live where you like to hang out or do you like to hang out where you live?

A Bay View holiday
Besides food and writing, one of my other huge passions is Bay View, and with the holidays upon us, I thought it was a great time to share just a few ideas to get you started shopping locally-owned businesses for the holidays:

Here's a question for you: What ever happened to meatloaf? Don't worry, it's around; you just have to know where to find it. And while some places on this list seem a natural haven for old-school home cooking, others might come as a surprise. Here is OnMilwaukee.com's guide to local food of the finger-licking variety.
