Prediction: mediocrity with bouts of brilliance and futility
As a sports fan, I've become accustomed to mediocrity. So, as I read your talkbacks to Dave Begel's column this week about the Brewers' chances of turning things around this season, I'm reminded of why I like the teams I do.

Cementing a baseball tradition in Queens
As we rode the number 7 train east toward the "Mets-Willets Point" stop on Sunday, my son asked, "Are you sad that Shea Stadium is gone?" "Yes," I said and my son followed with the classic little kid follow-up. "Why?" "Well," I told him, "because that's where I saw all the baseball games when I was a kid like you."

"Baseball polygamist" explains his dual loyalties
While some believe fans can't divide their loyalties, those folks haven't met Milwaukee's Joey Buchholz. Buchholz -- who lives in Greenfield and works at the UW Credit Union -- is a fan of both his hometown Brewers and his adopted New York Mets. He is also the author of a self-published book about his dual fandom, "Two Loves: The Story of a Baseball Polygamist."

Closeout -- 90% off all Jets sports team wear
Milwaukee's love affair with the Jets was brief. One lackluster season long, in fact. Having spent roughly half my life in New York City and half in Milwaukee, I never saw much love for either city in the other. So, seeing Jets jerseys in local shops was about as eye-opening as finding Brewers gear and cheesehead hats in Times Square.

Thanks for the words of consolation
It's a rough Monday for the baseball-loving side of me, but it could be a whole lot worse.

Brewers charge into the playoffs; will face Phillies
Led by leftfielder Ryan Braun (pictured) and indomitable pitcher CC Sabathia, the Brewers defeated the Cubs, 3-1, before a sellout crowd of 45,299 Sunday at Miller Park. A few minutes later, the Mets lost to the Marlins in New York, giving the Brewers the National League wild card berth and their first trip to the playoffs since 1982.

Brewers beat Cubs, pass Mets for Wild Card lead
Rickie Weeks hit a three-run homer and Seth McClung pitched four scoreless innings of relief as the Brewers beat Chicago, 5-1, and took a one-game lead over the Mets in the National League wild-card race.

Brewers Notebook: Clinging to playoff hopes
Even after a tumultuous start to September, the Brewers are just 1½ games behind the front-running Mets in the National League wild-card race. With six games to play, they'll need to win out if they want to play baseball in October.

More of the same in Sveum's first time out
They had a new manager. A different lineup. And their ace on the mound. Still, none of that was enough to help the Brewers snap their losing ways and they now trail the Mets in the Wild Card race.

It's all coming together ... or is it?
Now that the Brewers are facing the Phillies, it's all coming together for this joint Mets / Brewers fan. Or is it?

The ups and downs of weekday baseball
Because my boss is cool, I went to see the Brewers take on the Mets yesterday for the second time in three days. Here are some ruminations on an afternoon at the ballpark.

Randolph firing shouldn't give fans the Willies
Firing someone is never easy. It smarts. It stings. It's the ultimate rejection. "We no longer want you." There is no massaging that hard truth and nothing could have softened the blow.

Manager scrutiny can cause a case of the Willies
Mets manager Willie Randolph, who is on the hot seat after a collapse last season and a slow start in '08, wondered aloud if race is a factor in his situation. Steve Czaban says yes, but not in a detrimental way.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
