Brewers Notebook: Hot Stove edition
Unlike the Yankees, the Brewers have been very quiet on the free agent market this winter. The team budgeted a payroll right around $80 million for the upcoming season -- similar to last year. Despite taking money off the books from Ben Sheets, Brian Shouse. Eric Gagne and CC Sabathia, the team is already at that point heading into Spring Training. The key, owner Mark Attanasio says, is the built-in flexibility to make moves later.

Saturday Scorecard: "Introducing Mr. Hoffman..."
More than 10,000 Brewers fans braved frigid temperatures and headed Downtown to attend the club's "On Deck" event Saturday at the Midwest Airlines Center. One of the highlights of the event, which included autographs, photos and clinics, was an introductory press conference by the team's new closer, Trevor Hoffman, who donned his new jersey and spoke at length about his new team, his leadership abilities and his theme song.

Brenly seems to fit the bill as Brewers' next manager
Based on the apparent criteria, the Brewers can halt their search for a new skipper right now. Cubs TV announcer Bob Brenly has it all: experience, a track record of post-season success, media savvy ... Still, it's not a slam-dunk. One of the only certainties in baseball is that the moves that seem logical, easy and obvious seldom work out that way.

Brewers Notebook: Postseason power outage
A punchless offense brought the Brewers' postseason to a screeching halt. Now, it's time to reevaluate what went wrong, what worked and who will be back next year when Milwaukee tries to take the next step towards a championship. At the top of the to-do list: extending general manager Doug Melvin's deal and deciding whether or not to retain Dale Sveum.

NLDS Notebook: Patience pays off for slumping bats
Discipline and patience haven't been hallmarks of the Brewers' offense this season. Against Philadelphia lefty Jamie Moyer, those two virtues paid off as the Brewers rattled off 11 hits and stayed alive in the National League Division Series with a 4-1 victory at Miller Park.

After all the ups and downs, the payoff was fantastic
The passion and patience for a baseball team are unlike the fandom for any other sport. And baseball is unlike any other sport. In football, you have a whole week between games to either get over a loss and get ready for the next team or enjoy your victory and get ready for the next team. In basketball, the game moves so fast and with such magic intensity that you hardly have time to greet the person sitting next to you. Baseball is like your favorite old pair of blue jeans or that sweater with the hole in it that you just can't throw away.
