The best of the best burgers?
I finally ate lunch at Five Guys Burgers and Fries today, and, you know, they make a mighty fine burger. But Kopp's doesn't have much to worry about. Others have raved and raved and raved about Five Guys, which makes me wonder if Milwaukee really is the home of the world's best burger?

Take the Milwaukee Challenge: Butter burgers, Kopp's vs. Culver's
OnMilwaukee.com's ongoing "Take the Milwaukee Challenge" series takes on a plethora of locally-made products, everything from custard and coffee to wine and water (Milwaukee vs. Waukesha). This time 'round, we pit Milwaukee's beloved butter burger against the one offered by the Wisconsin-born Culver's fast food chain.

Milwaukee's best frozen custard, 2009: Kopp's
Like every year, it wasn't even a popularity or name recognition contest for our readers to pick a winner, as Karl Kopp does make some indisputably delicious desserts. With several locations around town, his stands blend an eye for design detail, robot-like efficiency and melty, eggy, creamy goodness.

Give me custard or give me death
Sunday's Sound-off question asked if custard was overrated, and according to the majority of Talkbackers, it's not. So, let's celebrate this frozen, high-fat perfection by declaring our favorite flavors!

Sunday Sound-off: Is custard overrated?
Most Milwaukeeans love their custard, and in this town, we have no problem finding it at Kopp's, Leon's, Bella's and oodles of other neighborhood custard stands. However, some people are less enthused about the thick, rich frozen treat. What are your thoughts?

OnMilwaukee.com Recommends: June 4, 2009
The conversation in the editorial office was all over the map this week, so the recommendations travel in some strange avenues (hopefully by bicycle). We start with a combination razor / shaving cream dispenser known as the Titan 6 (pictured). And, then we move on to some cool music, a great sandwich, a very fiscally responsible iPhone app, a ride to the Brewers' game and a handy hygiene hint.

Dear Five Guys: Where have you been all my life?
Looking for an easy way to start a debate in this town? It's simple: just ask people who makes the best burger. Some will say Sobelman's. Some will say Kopp's. Some will say Elsa's or Solly's. Several other places will pop into the conversation, but they'll need to make room. The national chain -- Five Guys Burgers and Fries -- is announcing its presence with authority.

Milwaukee's Kopp continues westward expansion with Phoenix's Hanny's
Most Milwaukeeans conjure images of butter burgers and frozen custard with they think of local restaurateur Karl Kopp. Now Phoenicians can add Hanny's, 40 N. 1st St., to the list of Kopp's dynasty, along with AZ 88 in Scottsdale and Bar 89 in New York City.

Milwaukee's best frozen custard, 2008: Kopp's
Kopp's has been a local custard staple since the classic '50s and, thankfully, it hasn't changed all that much over the decades. There are now three area locations -- Glendale, Brookfield and Greenfield -- so a double cone and a jumbo burger are never too far away.

Frozen custard guide
It may be Brew City, but custard is no small matter in Milwaukee, where everyone has his or her own favorite custard stand. This, of course, may go a long way toward explaining our waistlines. But, hey, what's the point of livin' if you can't go a-lickin' custard every now and again.

With summer waning, we're catching up on our reading in the editorial office. We recommend a couple books this week, including a nice take on Harley-Davidson's history, along with some delicious homemade barbecue sauce, mellow music and a tip for Downtown living.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
