Milwaukee's best Japanese, 2009: Izumi's
Izumi's, 2150 N. Prospect Ave., has earned a reputation in Milwaukee for friendly, accommodating service, as well as a tasty menu that doesn't break the bank. OnMilwaukee.com readers voted it their favorite Japanese restaurant for the third straight year and, again, Nanakusa was a close second.

Satisfaction ebbs and flows at Nanakusa
Nanakusa Japanese Restaurant, 408 E. Chicago St., can now be classified as one of Milwaukee's veteran sushi restaurants, with more than five years of service under its belt, and it is one of Milwaukee's three premier sushi mainstays. I've visited Nanakusa nearly a dozen times over the years, with varying degrees of success.

Japanese restaurant coming to Wisconsin Avenue
Crews are prepping the former Aladdin's / Saladmaker / Taco Bell space at 202 W. Wisconsin Ave., on the corner of North 2nd Street. Several words including "steak," "seafood" and "Sushi" now grace the building and a "Coming Soon Japanese Restaurant" sign hangs in the window.

Reiki flows the chi to all the right places
Thirty years ago, most Americans knew little about Eastern culture other than egg rolls and the "Ancient Chinese Secret" detergent commercial. Today, healers like Rennie Laing of Blue Earth Studio have brought massage -- and now reiki -- to the mainstream.

Aesthetically pleasing "Mikado" offers hours of eye sushi
The full house crowd at the opening of Skylight's production of "The Mikado" was twittering with excitement Friday night. A few people were dressed in yukatas and Japanese headbands in anticipation of the season's last show.

Izumi's new digs are a mixed bag
After 15 years, Izumi's restaurant moved next door, into the old Milwaukee Western Fuel Co. building. The new dining space is much larger and classier, but some aspects of the new environment leave diners perplexed.

Saketumi and Fresh to provide one-two sushi punch downtown
Get ready for Saketumi, a Japanese/Korean restaurant, and Fresh, a lounge. The double-decker destination will open this fall on Milwaukee Street, and its owner is psyched to have a spot on the red-hot road.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
