Hardy trade just the beginning
At first glance, Doug Melvin's decision to trade J.J. Hardy for a virtually unknown centerfielder raised some eyebrows. But look beyond the surface, and you'll see a deal that is merely setting the table for what's yet to come.

Saturday Scorecard: Did you hear about the Bucks?
Five games is a small sample and nobody is printing playoff tickets yet, but the Bucks are taking steps toward winning back fans and creating buzz. The play of rookie point guard Brandon Jennings (foreground) has been impressive, Andrew Bogut (above) looks healthy and second-round pick Jodie Meeks joined forces with both during a blowout victory over the Knicks on Saturday.

Hardy traded to Minnesota, Brewers get CF Gomez
As expected, the Brewers traded shortstop J.J. Hardy. Somewhat surprisingly, though, the team didn't bring back pitching for the 2007 National League All-Star, instead getting Carlos Gomez from the Minnesota Twins.

Brewers' core could soon be separated
Once upon a time, Bill Hall, Ben Sheets, J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart were considered integral components in the Brewers' long term plans. Hall and Sheets are gone and it looks like Hart and Hardy might be on their way out after the season. What's it mean for the Brewers? Nothing, really. This is baseball's "Circle of Life" for smaller-market franchises.

Brewers Notebook: Last chance to make noise
With 32 games to play, the Brewers are running out of time to make a move in the National League Central. After going 10-12 in 22 straight games against sub-.500 teams, there's a gauntlet looming ahead, beginning with three games in St. Louis against the division-leading Cardinals.

Saturday Scorecard: 5 things to watch for tonight
The Packers open their 2009 exhibition season with a game against Cleveland tonight at Lambeau Field. While preseason football usually isn't compelling, there are a few storylines to follow as the men in green and gold unveil their new 3-4 defense, search for a proficient punter and try to erase the sour taste left by a disappointing 2008 campaign.

Kudos to Crew for sweeping changes, but too little too late
The news releases from the Brewers are pouring out fast and furiously today. In the last two hours, I learned the Brewers fired Bill Castro as pitching coach, shipped J.J. Hardy to the minors and designated Bill Hall for assignment.

Saturday Scorecard: Close call hurts Brewers, but...
Mark DiFelice's pitch to Jake Fox sure looked like a strike. Although the Brewers lost the game on the walk-off walk that resulted from it, they have to accept the fact that they squandered a boatload of scoring opportunities earlier in the game.

Brewers Notebook: Weeks is out for the season
Second baseman Rickie Weeks, who has provided a spark at the top of the Brewers' lineup this season, will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn sheath tendon in his left wrist. The injury, which is similar to one week suffered in 2006, will require a recovery period of four to six months.

It's a bountiful Brewers birthday type of day
If you're going to Miller Park to watch the Brewers play the Astros tonight, take along some cake. Or be prepared to sing "Happy Birthday."

Saturday Scorecard: Rivers rolls to brink of title
A year ago, most Boston fans wanted the Celtics to fire coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers. Now, the former Marquette University standout has his team one victory from a championship.

Looks aren't everything in sports (but they help)
Performance is important for athletes like Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy (pictured), but good looks can help lift the "Q rating," which can lead to lucrative endorsement deals and fervent fan clubs.

Brewers Notebook: Kendall making an early impact
The Brewers signed Jason Kendall to work with their pitching staff and provide leadership in the clubhouse. His offense, which is among the best on the team, has been an added bonus.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
