PicPocket Books offer alternative to video games on the go
In September, I took a long trip with my youngster and brought along some things to keep us amused during the long flights and airport downtime. If only I'd known about PicPocket Books, which were just launching at that time. The Milwaukee company is already the largest publisher of children's picture book applications for the iPhone or iPod Touch.

External or internal compass?
With the iPhone in hand, there was no need to analyze maps, invoke directional assistance or employ my stellar sense of direction. Google Maps showed me the way. When I was lost on a country highway or popped out of the subway, the iPhone gave me my precise location.

The iPhone effect
Recently, I blogged about getting an iPhone and how it would affect my life. Of course, it hasn't changed things in any profound way -- I still live in the same house, work at the same job, etc. But, it certainly has made a mark on my day to day existence.

Awesome iPhone is a time-suck
It will come as no news to anyone with an iPhone -- or the significant other of anyone with one -- that this slim, useful device does lots of things well. What it does best, it seems, is make time disappear.

Uncorked: Mobile wine apps -- Yay or nay?
You already lean on your iPhone or Blackberry for help in all kinds of situations. What about when it comes to selecting a wine? An informative app could help you out of a jam. The major problems with these sites is that you have no way to balance the information you just looked up with what is staring you in the face on the retail shelf or in the monstrosity of a wine list open before you.

Attempting to unplug Up North
I actually thought that being deep in the North Woods would compromise my iPhone service and untangle me from its trappings. Silly me.

MLB App blackout policy doesn't make any sense
If the point of MLB.com's iPhone App is to follow your favorite team wherever you may be, why is the archaic blackout policy in effect?

Voicemail phobia?
A while ago, I wrote a blog about how voicemail has started to annoy me. But lately, I find myself dreading the other part of voicemail: checking it.

First hands-on impressions of new iPhone 3GS
Yes, I'm that guy. The guy who stood in line to get the iPhone 3G the day it came out a year ago, and the guy who stood in line to get the new iPhone 3GS this morning. Unlike last year, this line only had four people in it at 7 a.m., and I was in and out of the AT&T store on S. 76th St. by 7:15 a.m.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
