Predicting the biggest events of this decade
We're 31 days away from 2010 and in the coming weeks, news magazines will begin to debate what events dominated and shaped the first decade of the 21st century. These would be my predictions, for the most influential national events and Milwaukee stories in the last decade. And to add debate to controversy, I've ranked them from the most important on down.

Facebook friends with privileges
The other night, Janet wondered aloud as to how many ex-girlfriends I had as Facebook friends. Not that she was stressed or upset, just a little playfully jealous. "Off the top of my head there's a few missing, but a good number," I responded. "Whatev," she retorted. I couldn't help but laugh at the minor showing of insecurity from my otherwise strong, confident wife.

I'm now an official twit(terer)
I dove into LinkedIn and found it to be not terribly useful. Then I flipped open Facebook and have used it to make new connections, reconnect with old friends and bolster my work with OnMilwaukee.com in many ways. I've finally signed up for Twitter, but I'm still finding my feet.

Facebook allows me to salute high-chokin' Felix
I know, everyone is already tweeting and twittering, but I still prefer Facebook, which allows me to communicate with people I don't get to see or talk to much during our busy lives. And we can do it in more than a sentence. But what I really love is the way Facebook allows me to bond with strangers who share the same interests.

Sound-off: Is Facebook a waste of time?
Anyone who uses the social networking site Facebook knows that it can suck up your time. However, most would agree that there is an upside to Facebook, too. So, is Facebook worthwhile or is it a big waste of time? Sound off, readers, on cyber social networking.

The accidental resume
Say you're one of the people out there looking for a job. Or, for that matter, have a job and wish to move elsewhere. You place your paper resume, portfolio or calling card at the feet of a potential employer, and what do you think happens?

The (anti)social media problem
OK, I'll go as far as to say that social media is mending our society. And though, I admit, it has its fair share of ills (a less-than-accurate Wikipedia, "haters" leaving excessively negative comments), the open dialogue is priceless. It's rebuilding the village lost long ago to industrialization, radio and television.

Local Jerkass partners with National Lampoon
Keeping up with all the snarky things that make the masses chuckle is a full time job. Actually, it's Richard Lorbach's job. Basically, he gets paid to be a jerkass -- or at least think like one. His T-shirt business, Jerkass Clothing Company, is a lighthearted exercise in crudeness, a playful documentation of current events, nostalgia and addiction.
