Saturday Scorecard: A crucial holiday shopping trip
So, you think you feel pressure about holiday shopping? Most people will forget their holiday gifts by mid-January. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin heads to the winter meetings on Monday in Indianapolis and the results of his expedition will have ramifications into August and September.

Hardy trade just the beginning
At first glance, Doug Melvin's decision to trade J.J. Hardy for a virtually unknown centerfielder raised some eyebrows. But look beyond the surface, and you'll see a deal that is merely setting the table for what's yet to come.

Hardy traded to Minnesota, Brewers get CF Gomez
As expected, the Brewers traded shortstop J.J. Hardy. Somewhat surprisingly, though, the team didn't bring back pitching for the 2007 National League All-Star, instead getting Carlos Gomez from the Minnesota Twins.

With World Series over, Brewers will get to work
Now that the Yankees have defeated the Phillies, captured their 27th championship and are planning their victory parade, the rest of the baseball world will begin making off-season plans. For the Brewers, the "to do" list includes deciding which veteran free agents to retain and the almost never-ending pursuit of quality pitching.

Monday musings: October 2009 edition
I'm a little distracted today. Maybe it's from a nice weekend, or maybe it has something to do with some sort of football game tonight. I do have a bunch of things on my mind, though. I'd like to get them on "paper" before they float away.

Brewers notebook: Macha will be back in 2010
The 2009 season came to an end for the Brewers Sunday in St. Louis with a 10-inning, 9-7 victory over the Cardinals. The victory gave Milwaukee an 80-82 record -- the first losing season in manager Ken Macha's career. Before the game, general manager Doug Melvin announced that Macha will be back in 2010 with a team option for a return in 2011.

Brewers Notebook: Macha plans to return in 2010
After finally ending the franchise playoff drought, the Brewers floundered in 2009 thanks to some season long slumps from key offensive players and a rash of injuries to an already suspect starting rotation. Still, manager Ken Macha -- after meeting with general manager Doug Melvin this week -- is planning to return next season.

Brewers' core could soon be separated
Once upon a time, Bill Hall, Ben Sheets, J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart were considered integral components in the Brewers' long term plans. Hall and Sheets are gone and it looks like Hart and Hardy might be on their way out after the season. What's it mean for the Brewers? Nothing, really. This is baseball's "Circle of Life" for smaller-market franchises.

Brewers Notebook: Last chance to make noise
With 32 games to play, the Brewers are running out of time to make a move in the National League Central. After going 10-12 in 22 straight games against sub-.500 teams, there's a gauntlet looming ahead, beginning with three games in St. Louis against the division-leading Cardinals.

Don't put the Brewers' woes on Melvin's shoulders
A year ago, Doug Melvin was a rock star. Having just pulled off a trade that brought CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. Then, Melvin was the king of Milwaukee. Since then, Melvin's popularity and approval ratings have plummeted faster than the Brewers' playoff chances. Fans singing the general manager's praises a year ago are now calling for his head.

Brewers Notebook: Rotation back at full strength
For the first time in weeks, manager Ken Macha will have his regular five starters back in the rotation. Jeff Suppan will return from the disabled list to start Tuesday against the Reds while Dave Bush, sidelined since mid-June with a torn triceps, will take the mound Thursday.

Brewers Notebook: Help coming from within
With Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan both on the disabled list, General Manager Doug Melvin looked high and low to get help for his maligned pitching staff before Friday's deadline for non-waiver trades. In the end, with slim pickings and the prices for players that were available a little too steep, Melvin made a move that he hopes would help an overworked bullpen and hoped that the players on hand would be able to help right the Brewers ship.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
