Winter staycations let you chill close to home
When the temperature drops and the flakes start flying, it's not unusual to turn your thoughts toward a vacation -- usually of the sunny and / or beach variety. But a down economy has dashed the Disney dreams for some, forcing weary Wisconsinites to look a little closer to home for a quick winter getaway.

Get up close to Wisconsin wineries
If you want to get a closer look at Wisconsin wineries, two of them -- Parallel 44 and Stone's Throw -- offer ways to learn more. Kewaunee's Parallel 44 has a Barrel Club that lets you make your own wine and Stone's Throw hosts a Milwaukee-area tasting event on Sept. 16.

Two degrees (or fewer) of Milwaukee separation
Granted, a weekend in a Door County isn't exactly a trip to Australia, but I couldn't have been more surprised to run into the four people I saw between Fish Creek and Sister Bay on Sunday and Monday.

Tradition!
Tomorrow morning, I'm heading up to Door County for my 16th annual "camping trip" with my best friend, Eron. I put it in quotes, because other than sleeping in a tent in Peninsula State Park, we're not really doing much camping. And I couldn't be more excited.

Road trip: Washington Island
Located at the tip of Wisconsin's Door County peninsula, Washington Island is the largest of five islands accessible to tourists. The Island's relative proximity and shared landscape are virtually where the similarity to Door County start and end.

Hart's book opens window on Door County
Some might say nobody knows a place like a native, but in a location like Door County, "local" might be harder to define. Certainly, someone like Virginia native and Minnesota resident John Fraser Hart fits the bill. After all, he's spent countless days in Door County over the past 50 years.

Wenhardt paints serenity in the Third Ward
Watercolor's complexity and challenge sustains Wenhardt's interest in the medium. Spending years learning the characteristics of washes and how to anticipate color bleeding, Wenhardt acknowledges there is no chance to re-do or go over watercolor work. Instead, he's confident from start to finish with the possibility of what he refers to as "happy accidents."

Milwaukee is a great place on a great lake, but every now and then it's nice to escape its urban parameters and explore less-populated parts of the state. Wisconsin is full of gems, both well-known and well-hidden. Here are a few of our favorites.

This Sucks: Milwaukee's inferiority complex with Chicago
Regional squabbles are nothing new. Plenty of states and cities share a border with animosity: Ohio and Michigan, New York and New Jersey. For us, it's the raging battle between Wisconsin and Illinois. But does it have to be that way?
