Prediction: mediocrity with bouts of brilliance and futility
As a sports fan, I've become accustomed to mediocrity. So, as I read your talkbacks to Dave Begel's column this week about the Brewers' chances of turning things around this season, I'm reminded of why I like the teams I do.

Begel swings back on the MMA discussion
OnMilwaukee.com sports columnist Dave Begel kicked up a controversy Tuesday when he wrote a column expressing his dislike -- perhaps "disgust" is a better word -- for a mixed-martial arts (MMA) event he saw on cable TV.

Missing links: The sun sets on a golfer's passion
For many years, OnMilwaukee.com sports columnist Dave Begel was obsessed with playing golf. Now that he has put away his clubs and given up playing the game regularly, he has come to realize that it wasn't so much the game that kept him coming back to the course, but the friendship and the ritual and the connection that the sport fostered for much of his life.

For Favregate finale, fans should forgive and forget
Now that Packers legend Brett Favre has retired (again), many fans are wondering when fans and team officials will welcome the iconic quarterback back to Lambeau Field. OnMilwaukee.com sports columnist Dave Begel thinks the healing process should start immediately, if not sooner.

Another year, another big batch of resolutions
This is the time of year when every trite and hackneyed sports columnist writes a New Year's column, trying to be funny, cute and meaningful at the same time. Revisiting a riveting referendum on Rodgers
After considering the reaction to last week's missive, OnMilwaukee.com sports columnist Dave Begel stands by his concern over whether Aaron Rodgers is the kind of quarterback who can create a climate of inspiration that infuses his teammates with performance beyond their abilities.

Rodgers may lack intangible qualities of a champion
Aaron Rodgers' first season as a starting quarterback in Green Bay hasn't been bad. Certainly, Rodgers seems to be a lot tougher than people thought he might be. He also seems to have a great mental grasp of coach Mike McCarthy's offensive philosophy. But there is one thing that may be missing, the thing that the great ones have that drives a team to a title. Can Rodgers inspire?

Reflections from a super-sad Sunday in sports
While Prince Fielder and the Brewers watched an encouraging season sputter to a close with a loss to Philadelphia Sunday at Miller Park, the underdog Atlanta Falcons ran over and around the Packers, who suffered their third straight loss. The only thing that could have made things worse for local sports viewers was getting ptomaine poisoning from the ham and cheese sandwich.

I'm talking back to Wilde's Talkback blog
Sportswriters operate out of conviction. They work to find the information they need and then they write about it. It's not all that complicated.

Diving into a debate about the Bucks and a chicken
In the eyes of OnMilwaukee.com freelance sports columnist Dave Begel, assigning blame without naming names is cowardly. Begel calls out a local colleague for doing it.

There is a lot to like about the 2007-'08 Bucks, but the team must make a change at point guard in order to reach the next level.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
