One Milwaukee gardener takes it to the roof
Erik Lindberg created Milwaukee's first rooftop based Community Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) after converting the roof of a woodshop near 6th St. and Capitol Drive. With a local cabinetmaker still utilizing the downstairs shop, Lindberg built six raised soil beds plus a large composting pile up top.

It's easier than you might think to buy food locally
Simply put, the CSA system connects local farmers with local consumers who become members or shareholders of the CSA by financing the farm's whole seasonal budget, including seeds, tools, maintenance and land payments. In return, they get weekly or monthly baskets of fresh, organic produce, fruits, flowers, herbs, eggs, milk -- anything the farm can produce.

Can you taste the difference between organic and non-organic foods?
Not wanting your produce or ingredients scoured in chemical-laden pesticides in obvious. And the eco-reasons for supporting organics are many. But my question is, can you taste the difference between organic food and non-organic food?

Know your onion! And your tomato, lettuce, etc.
One of the biggest issues concerning the green movement is the source of food. We've all heard the staggering stats; that in the U.S., our food travels an average of 1,500 miles via various modes of gas-guzzling transportation before it reaches our plates. The lesson to take away from this? Eat locally, as much as is possible.

Daily dish: Mashed potatoes and turnips with sautéed onions and greens
Just before the summer season this year, we committed to joining a local CSA, which stands for community supported agriculture. We chose Pinehold Gardens, a 21-acre CSA farm in Oak Creek. For the past 18 weeks we have received hearty vegetable shares, the contents of which shift with the changing harvesting season.

How Slow Food is gaining momentum in Milwaukee
As a concept, Slow Food is much more complex than just the opposite of fast food, but that is part of it. Slow Food is a system -- and a way of living -- that is based on the principals of high quality and taste, environmental sustainability and social justice. Today it's expanded globally to 122 countries, and in the U.S., the 16,000 members of Slow Food USA work to promote local and traditional food products.

CSA farms keep consumer food dollars local
In our efforts to be greener, owning a vehicle with good gas mileage is an important carbon reducer. But being conscious of your food's mileage can have a pretty large environmental impact, as well. One of the easiest ways to do so is through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms.

Practical practices for a greener home
You don't have to switch over to solar power or grow all your own food to be a member of the green movement. For the most part, greening your home is more about common sense than it is about competing for the Eco-Warrior Award.

Transfer Pizzeria Café is a Mitchell Street magnet
If you're a frequent South 1st Street commuter, you've probably noticed the new Transfer Pizzeria Café, 101 W. Mitchell St. With its name broadcast in stylized neon, the corner building is a definite eye-catcher at night -- a glowing sign of life in a rather dim section of the city.
