Warm up at bars and restaurants with fireplaces
In winter, the warmth of a fire makes a good drinking buddy, and toasting -- or getting toasted -- in front of a fireplace is perfect on a blustery night. Here's a list of some great places to warm you inside and out.

Milwaukee's best coffee shop / café, 2009: Alterra
We can't remember a readers' poll in which Alterra didn't take the top prize as best coffee shop / café, but this year was even more lopsided than most. In 2009, Alterra received 52.5 percent of the votes; second place, Stone Creek got 7.5 percent.

Kudos to coffee punch cards
Yesterday, OnMilwaukee.com's Bobby Tanzilo, Jeff Sherman and I coincidentally cashed in our full coffee punch cards. Personally, this was only the second time I held onto a punch card long enough to fill it up, but I'm a die-hard believer in them now because a free fancy coffee is a great way to start a day.

The National is a great new addition to cafe culture
In a great little storefront spot on the corner of 9th Street and National Avenue, two large picture windows adorned in retro print drapery reveal a quaint, yet contemporary looking café. This is The National, a brand new coffee shop and restaurant at 839 W. National Ave. that recently reclaimed the space left empty by Brooklyn Bob's move to Downtown.
