Rapid review: Yen Ching
Back in the day, hungry North Shore diners would think nothing of taking the short trek to 76th Street and Good Hope Road for a good meal. But as dining options in the area thinned, only Yen Ching still packs 'em in, with outstanding Chinese cuisine than stands the test of time.

Saigon Vietnamese focuses on pho
Located just across the street from Phan's Garden Vietnamese Restaurant, Saigon Restaurant occupies the first level of a two-story house. A staple of this South Side community for more than 10 years, Saigon is a haven of home cooking for Vietnamese immigrants; typically the tried and true sign of ethnic culinary authenticity.

William Ho's visit brings good and bad fortune
William Ho's is a staple of Shorewood dining. It's held down the south end of the suburb for two decades, and continues to draw diners from all over the city. It had been about 10 years since we dined at William Ho's, so we decided to check it out and update our opinions about this classic Chinese restaurant.

Duo works to promote Milwaukee's Chinese history
Although the city is dotted with Chinese restaurants and we were happy to welcome YI Jinlian to the Bucks -- however briefly - Chinese-Americans in Milwaukee seem to have a pretty low profile. "Chinese Milwaukee" ($19.99), by David B. Holmes and Wenbin Yuan, the co-founders of the Wauwatosa-based Milwaukee Chinese Historical Society, just might help change that.

Milwaukee's best Chinese, 2008: Emperor of China
Year after year, Emperor of China takes home the readers' pick for best Chinese restaurant. And we agree. "The Emp" holds a special place in the hearts of OnMilwaukee.com, as that's where we hatched our original business plan in 1998.

Step into a Chinese time machine at House of Fong
Walking inside was like stepping into a Chinese time machine. Red vinyl booths, arched wood paneling and a sound system quietly playing the theme from "Taxi." I felt almost giddy.

Reiki flows the chi to all the right places
Thirty years ago, most Americans knew little about Eastern culture other than egg rolls and the "Ancient Chinese Secret" detergent commercial. Today, healers like Rennie Laing of Blue Earth Studio have brought massage -- and now reiki -- to the mainstream.

Izumi's new digs are a mixed bag
After 15 years, Izumi's restaurant moved next door, into the old Milwaukee Western Fuel Co. building. The new dining space is much larger and classier, but some aspects of the new environment leave diners perplexed.

"House of Flying Daggers" combines action and beauty
Chinese director Yimou Zhang is no newcomer to the American silver screen. His films, "To Live," "Hero," "Happy Times" and "Raise the Red Lantern," were lauded here for their epic beauty and their charming, earthy stories. His new film has that and more.

Milwaukee is ban-zai for bonsai
The Milwaukee Bonsai Society has about 180 members and some of them, like club president Jack Douthitt, own more than 100 of the tiny trees. Bonsai and bonsai workshops, although very popular, are available at only a few places in the city.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
