Melvin's best move could be the one he doesn't make
Doug Melvin ignited the passion of Brewers fans a year ago when he pulled the trigger on a trade that brought CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. The price was high -- the team's top prospect, as well as two others -- but so was the reward, as the Brewers finally returned to the playoffs. With the Brewers scuffling at the break, fans want Melvin to make another big splash. But is it really worth removing key pieces to the team or further thinning the organization of top prospects?

Yankees' excess makes it easy to root against them
The baseball season is almost upon us, and sports columnist Dave Begel is fixated on two things. One is that the Brewers surprise us all by being good again. The other is that the Yankees pay the price for their ridiculous excess by falling flat on their face. Begel isn't talking about coming close and missing. He's talking about a record of something like 62-100.

Melvin's savvy can keep Brewers in the hunt
Losing CC Sabathia and -- in all reality -- Ben Sheets to free agency is a big blow for Brewers fans, still giddy after the team's first postseason appearance in 26 years. But general manager Doug Melvin has shown an ability to find quality pieces to complement a young and talent team ... and he still has two months before pitchers and catcher report.

Sabathia headed to the Yankees for $160 million
In the end, it wasn't even close. CC Sabathia, who led the Brewers to their first playoff appearance since 1982, will sign a free-agent deal with New York. The Brewers, who had offered the lefty $100 million, are left to look elsewhere.

Hey Journal Sentinel, the Yankees don't need your help
As if trying to sign CC Sabathia wasn't hard enough, it looks like the local paper may have helped make the Brewers' task a little harder this week.

Help wanted: Experienced big-league manager
Doug Melvin likes Dale Sveum. So did owner Mark Attanasio and the players. Despite a 7-5 finish and the franchise's first playoff berth since 1982, Melvin opted not to bring Sveum back as skipper in 2009 and is instead hoping to lure a manager with successful big-league experience.

Watching Favre leads to flashbacks and wishes
Watching an otherwise meaningless Jets-Bengals game prompted OnMilwaukee.com sports columnist Dave Begel to think about Brett Favre and a few of his other wishes for the sports world.

A look back at the 2008 Brewers
In the future, people will remember the 2008 Brewers as the team that snapped the franchise's postseason drought. With the Badgers playing their way out of bowl contention, the Bucks stumbling through the preseason and the Packers still trying to get on track under Aaron Rodgers, why not take one look back at the Brewers' long, strange trip.

Brewers Notebook: Postseason power outage
A punchless offense brought the Brewers' postseason to a screeching halt. Now, it's time to reevaluate what went wrong, what worked and who will be back next year when Milwaukee tries to take the next step towards a championship. At the top of the to-do list: extending general manager Doug Melvin's deal and deciding whether or not to retain Dale Sveum.

Was CC worth the price?
Barring a miraculous turnaround, CC Sabathia is unlikely to make another start as a Brewer. After flat-out dominating the NL for three months, he melted down in the NLDS at Philly. So was he worth giving up two top prospects? You be the judge.

NLDS Game 2 Recap: Phillies 5, Brewers 2
CC Sabathia has been as dominant as any pitcher in baseball since joining the Brewers in early July. The dominance came to an end Thursday, when he lasted just 3 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits -- all for extra bases -- including a grand slam as the Brewers fell, 5-2 to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

What others are saying about the Brewers
As hard as it is to believe, the Brewers have managed to overtake the Packers in terms of local media coverage. Yup, the Brew Crew is big news around here, but reporters across the country are filling column inches with stories about the Brewers, too.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
