Although Milwaukee's The Mighty Lumberhorn hasn't released an "official" CD in four years, the down-home hillbilly outfit -- that invented its own instrument and then named the band after it -- hasn't gone anywhere. In fact, The Mighty Lumberhorn returns with its second studio disc, "Lumberhorn Presents ... Nothing Ever Happened," which gets its official release with a gig at Linneman's Riverwest Inn on Dec. 19

Salt Creek's music proves rules are made to be broken
While you might get away with labeling Milwaukee's Salt Creek a bluegrass-influenced band, purists might not agree. But that's just fine with the band. As the new "Live" CD (ITMFA Records) proves, this is a band that lives for the moment and values the tightrope artistry of improvisation.

A bluegrass fest named Larry
In soccer, you had Pele; in boxing, Ali. In contemporary music, you have had Cher, Madonna, Yanni and others. In Blue Grass music, at least in western Wisconsin, you have Larry as in the 8th annual Larryfest. Read about it in Beyond Milwaukee.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
